No. 39 Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 16 Arizona in NCAA Tournament Round of 64
May 06, 2022 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite winning the doubles point and putting up a valiant fight in singles, the No. 39 Princeton University men's tennis team fell, 4-2, to the No. 16 University of Arizona Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in the Round of 64 at the NCAA Tournament.
"It's always tough when the team season comes to an end in a close match in post season. We fought to the end and played a great match quite honestly," said Head Coach Billy Pate. "We won a great doubles point and secured four first sets so we put ourselves in a great position. Unfortunately, we couldn't quite finish the way we wanted to. Arizona clawed hard and kept coming as we knew they would. This has been an incredible group of seniors and a wonderful team. We went through a lot these last few years but we are better for it. I'm delighted we have the NCAA individual championships to look forward to for a couple of these guys.
The Tigers took the early advantage, winning the doubles point; Karl Poling and Damian Rodriguez overcame Carlos Hassey and Gustraf Storm, 7-5, at No. 2, and the No. 3 position Thomas Bosancic and Filippos Astreinidis took down Colton Smith and Filip Malbasic, 6-2.
In singles, Poling earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Smith at No. 3. Senior Justin Barki, senior Damian Rodriguez, and junior Will Peters each took their matches to three set, but the Tigers would fall just short against the Wildcats.
