Sears Sets Records As Women's Lacrosse Advances To Ivy Title Game
May 06, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
PRINCETON -- Senior Kyla Sears wowed from start to finish as No. 1 seeded Princeton knocked off No. 4 seed Harvard, 13-6, to reach the Ivy League Tournament final.
Sears finished with a career-high nine points with six goals and three assists. She dabbled in history with both her first goal and her last. She became Princeton's all-time career points leader with her first goal midway through the opening quarter. With her final goal in the fourth quarter, she tied the program record for career goals, now sitting on 198 goals alongside Olivia Hompe '17.
Marge Donovan also made Princeton history in the win, winning seven draw controls to move into No. 1 all-time (192) and No. 1 in a season (90).
With the win, Princeton advances to the Ivy League Tournament title game for the fourth consecutive year and seventh overall. The Tigers will play No. 2 seed Yale at noon on May 8 at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Notes To Know:
How It Happened:
The Tigers never trailed in the game, building a 4-0 lead over the first ten minutes and never looking back. Grace Tauckus scored twice in that opening run, part of a three-goal night in her first career Ivy League Tournament game.
The Crimson countered with three goals of their own to close the first quarter and open the second. That run brought Harvard within a goal, but the Tigers never conceded the equalizer and would net the next three to take a 7-3 lead into halftime and never find themselves in series danger the rest of the way.
Sears took over in the second half, scoring four times and dishing out an assist to keep Princeton in front. Harvard tried to get some momentum with a goal early in the fourth quarter, but Charley Meier's goal to make it a 10-6 game with 11:21 to play was the final for Harvard in the game. Princeton scored three times in a span of 2:31 late in the period to ice the game -- including a highlight reel goal from Sears to tie the program goal record and give Princeton a 12-6 lead. Tauckus would cap things with her hat trick score with 3:28 to play.
