WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Princeton men's lightweight rowing team is ready for the 2022 IRA National Championships this weekend at Mercer Lake.
"We've made some good changes before Sprints, but the regatta happened before we could get completely comfortable," said Princeton head coach Marty Crotty. "With the three weeks before the IRAs, it's been enough time to get some final training in, relax and let the boats run a bit more. We're confident we can be a big factor in all the finals on Sunday morning."
The Tigers began the 2022 campaign by dropping the Murtaugh Cup to Navy and earning the Fosburg Cup over Georgetown. Princeton also won the Campbell Cup over Columbia before wins over Mercyhurst and MIT. Crotty's unit came home to defeat Delaware and Dartmouth but fell to Cornell the week after. The lightweight group lost to Penn, Georgetown, and Yale, but earned a decision over Harvard to finish the regular season. At Eastern Sprints, the 1V missed a medal by a second and a half while the 2V placed fourth overall.
Princeton has done historically very well at the IRA Championships with the 1V medaling in the four of the last five races. The Tigers have not finished lower than seventh since 2007. Princeton won the national crown, awarded to the winner of the 1V race with the 1922 Trophy five times (1994, 1996, 1998, 2009, 2010). The men's lightweight team also won three championships (1986, 1988,1989) before nationals were moved to IRAs.
