Princeton at Rhode Island, No. 9 Rutgers: Five Things to Know
August 30, 2022 | Women's Soccer
Thursday at Rhode Island, 7 p.m. | ESPN+ | Live StatsÂ
Sunday at No. 9 Rutgers, 11 a.m. | BTN+Â | Rutgers Radio | Live Stats
1. Big week, big awards: Sophomore Heather MacNab and rookie Kelsee Wozniak combined for 11 of the team's 17 points across the 2-0 opening weekend against Colgate and Fairfield. MacNab, who had a hat trick in a span of just 6:44 against Colgate and an assist on the first goal against Fairfield, was the Ivy Player of the Week and Wozniak, who had two assists and the team's final goal against Colgate, was the Ivy Rookie of the Week.Â
2. Long history, short history: Princeton's most-played non-conference opponent is Rutgers. The teams have met twice with any of the current players, with an 0-0 draw at Princeton in 2019 and a 4-3 Princeton win in 2021. Rutgers keeper Meagan McClelland, now a grad student with the Scarlet Knights, made five saves to get the 110-minute shutout in 2019 with Rutgers ranked No. 21 nationally. Two years later, Princeton was down 2-0 after 30 minutes and 3-1 with nearly 60 minutes gone before MacNab hit a PK goal to pull the Tigers within 3-2 and Lily Bryant scored to make it even with 20 minutes left. MacNab's second PK of the night with just more than 15 minutes to go put the Tigers up 4-3, and that's where it ended as Princeton knocked off No. 9-ranked Rutgers. Riley Tiernan scored twice for Rutgers and Allison Lynch had the other, and McClelland made one save.
While Princeton has faced Rutgers 32 times in program history, with Rutgers holding a 17-11-4 series lead, Princeton's 2-0 win last season against Rhode Island in Princeton was the teams' first meeting. Lexi Hiltunen got Princeton on the board in the 67th minute while Tyler McCamey made two saves in the shutout. For URI, Faith Hutchins played the full 90 in goal, making 14 saves.Â
3. Familiar place, unfamiliar place: Thursday's game at URI will be the Tigers' first visit to Kingston, R.I., but Sunday's visit to Piscataway will be the third time Princeton has played at Yurcak Field in the past year. Along with the Sept, 9, 2021 regular-season win for the Tigers, Princeton played the second round of the NCAA tournament there against No. 6-ranked TCU on Nov. 19, a match the Horned Frogs won 3-2 in double OT.Â
4. Tigers' strong starts: Princeton is off to a 2-0 start for the sixth time in seven competitive seasons under Sean Driscoll. Rhode Island (0-3-1) will be looking for its first win of the season and will be facing back-to-back Ivy opponents in the top two teams in the league last season. Brown was a 3-1 winner over the Rams last Sunday in Kingston. No. 9 Rutgers (4-0) is unbeaten entering Thursday's visit from Temple.
5. Familiar faces, new roles: Of the 11 players who started Sunday's game against Fairfield, 10 were on the team last year, but just three were in the starting lineup in last season's finale against TCU, in Lexi Hiltunen, Morgan Wiese and Aria Nagai. It is Princeton's third consecutive season with a different regular starter between the posts, with then-seniors Natalie Grossi '20 and Grace Barbara '22 playing most of the minutes each of the last two seasons. Tyler McCamey was 4-0 last season, including the win over URI, and is the first sophomore to start most of the minutes in goal since Grossi in 2017.Â
