Liu Wins Princeton Invite in Record Performance
September 25, 2022 | Women's Golf
Princeton sophomore Victoria Liu, the reigning Ivy League Championship medalist and Ivy Rookie of the Year, added more honors Sunday at Springdale Golf Club, becoming Princeton's first medalist at the annual Princeton Invitational in 15 years and doing so in tournament-record fashion in a field that included all six Ivy League programs.
Liu opened play with a 66 in Saturday's first round, tying the tournament record for low strokes in a single round with teammate Tiffany Kong and Albany's Amber Thornton, both in 2021, and Harvard's Tiffany Lim in 2013. Liu's 9-under finish was the tournament's best score to par by three strokes, surpassing the -6 from Thornton last year and Yale's Ami Gianchandani in 2019.
"It feels great because it's our first tournament of the season, so starting off with a win is of course great," Liu said. "I didn't put too much burden on myself. Last weekend, we played a practice round, so our coach prepared us well with strategies on each hole, and thanks a lot to my teammates for helping me out on all parts of the game. I couldn't do it without them, definitely."
A year after Princeton won its first team title since 2007, Liu became Princeton's first Princeton Invitational medalist since '07, when Susannah Aboff '09 won. Aboff also holds the program record for low strokes in a single round, at 65 from the 2008 Ivy League Championship.
Princeton was limited to three players due to health and safety protocols, one short of the four needed to make a run at defending its team title from a year ago. Junior Caris Kim finished at +21, placing 49th, and rookie Catherine Rao finish at +23 in her collegiate debut, tying for 51st.
"It was unfortunate that our team couldn't be here, so this win, not only is it for me, but for our whole team," Liu said.

Princeton will compete again next weekend at Old Dominion's Evie Odom Invitational at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Va.
