Men's Hockey Edged By No. 16 Cornell, 3-2
January 21, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton spotted No. 16 Cornell three power-play goals during the course of their game at Lynah Rink, and could not match in a 3-2 loss to the Big Red.
Â
Pito Walton and Liam Gorman (power play) had Princeton's goals, each assisted by Noah de la Durantaye who tied his career high with two assists.
Â
The Big Red opened the scoring with a Gabriel Seger power play goal 13:37 into the game. He worked himself loose in the high slot, redirecting a Sam Malinski wrist shot for a 1-0 Cornell lead.
Â
Princeton would equalize before the end of the first period via Pito Walton's fifth goal of the season. A strong forecheck from Nick Seitz funneled the puck to Noah de la Durantaye who slid to Walton who took open ice given to him and drove to the net. His original shot was blocked, but he followed his rebound and tucked it under the crossbar to send the game to the first intermission knotted at 1-1.
Â
Cornell again scored a power-play goal to take a lead, Sean Donaldson breaking down the right wing and firing a perfectly-placed shot over Pearson's shoulder for a 2-1 Big Red lead with 4:42 left in the second period.
Â
The Tigers countered quickly, needing just 2:38 to answer with a power-play goal of their own. Liam Gorman scored the goal, redirecting home a cross-ice pass from his younger brother, Brendan, for his 11th goal of the season.
Â
A third power-play goal for the Big Red came early in the third period, Cornell needing 0:21 of its man advantage to work a Dalton Bancroft one-timer that went back against the grain for a 3-2 Cornell lead.
