Men's Tennis Advances to ITA Kickoff Weekend Virginia Regional Championship Match
January 28, 2023 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A 4-1 victory over Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent Ole Miss Saturday morning at the Virginia Tennis Complex at the Boar's Head Sports Club saw the Princeton University men's tennis team advance to the Championship Match of the Virginia Regional at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend.
"I'm very proud of our effort and execution today against a strong team," said Head Coach Billy Pate. "We've had some battles with Ole Miss the last five years and we have the utmost respect for them. They are always battle tested and hard to beat - particularly if you allow them to be there at the end. We got off to strong starts in doubles and singles and rode the momentum. Most importantly, we made significant improvement in each match we've played thus far. I like the fact we are young and hungry. As coaches, we simply want to see continued improvement each match win or lose."
The Tigers won the doubles point, with Fnu Nidunjianzan and Will Peters earning a 6-3 victory over Nikola Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt at No. 1, and Filippos Astreinidis and Ellis Short taking down Simon Junk and John Hallquist, 6-4, at No. 2.
In singles, Nidunjianzan prevailed 6-1, 6-1 over No. 99 Slavic at the No. 1 position, and at No. 3 Thomas Bosancic defeated Engelhardt, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 6, Ellis Short dispatched Isac Strömberg, 6-3, 6-3.
