Brown Rallies Past Princeton In OT
October 14, 2023 | Football
Â
Princeton led the game 21-7 into the fourth quarter before Brown tied it with a pair of long touchdown marches, including a 50-yard connection from Jake Wilcox to Mark Mahoney, who pulled the ball in one-handed, with only 53 seconds to go to force the overtime.
Â
The Tigers scored a TD on their overtime possession when Blake Stenstrom hit an open Tyler Picinic for a 22-yard score, but the extra point attempt was blocked. Brown converted a 4th-and-1 on its drive and eventually got it inside the five before Walker caught the pass to tie it. Maron, who has not missed a PAT all season, then put the winning point on the board.
Â
Princeton allowed a Brown touchdown on its first possession and then wiped out the Bears, one of the most prolific offensive teams in the FCS, until the fourth quarter. By then, Princeton had scored three touchdowns of its own, the first two on things of beauty.
Â
Jiggie Carr got Princeton on the board with a gorgeous 37-yard run after he bounced off three Brown tacklers inside before finding found an opening that led to the end zone. Princeton took the lead in the second quarter, when, after a Jackson Fischer interception set up the Tigers on the Brown 45, Stenstrom dropped a pass perfectly to AJ Barber, who cut back across the field and went in untouched.
Â
Princeton's lead grew to 21-7 when John Volker bulled in from the 1 with 2:25 to go in the third quarter, but Brown would not go away. Instead, the Bears marched 62 yards in nine plays to make it 21-14, and then, after getting a crucial stop on a 3rd-and-1, went 89 yards on only five plays, the final 50 of which came from Mahoney.
Â
Stenstrom completed 20 of 38 for 198 yards, including seven for 126 to Barber, who had his second-striaight huge game and who now has 14 catches for 282 yards in his last two games. Carr ran 13 times for 76 yards.
Â
Liam Johnson had 12 tackles and an interception.
Â
Wilcox completed 35 of 57 for 355 yards for the Bears. It was the first win for former Tiger offensive coordinator James Perry against Princeton and the loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Princeton against Brown.
Â
Princeton hosts Harvard on Homecoming Day this coming Saturday at 1. Â
