Princeton Shuts Out Michigan to Advance in NCAA Tournament

Lexi Hiltunen's 80th-minute goal helped lift the Princeton women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Michigan to open the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Friday night at Roberts Stadium as Princeton advanced to the second round for the fifth time in its last six trips to the NCAAs.

Princeton outshot Michigan 18-11 overall and 8-6 on goal with Tyler McCamey making all six saves to become the second straight Tiger netminder to author a first-round shutout, joining former teammate Grace Barbara '22.

Hiltunen's goal came off a pass into the box from Aria Nagai that set up an initial shot that was blocked at the edge of the six-yard box, but Hiltunen stayed with the rebound and parked it inside the right post, underneath diving Michigan netminder Stephanie Sparkowski.

Princeton will head to Texas Tech for the second round of the NCAA tournament. While the game time is yet to be announced, North Carolina will face Alabama while the Tigers will take on the host Red Raiders with the winners meeting in the round of 16 on Sunday, also in Lubbock.
