Glory, Monday Wins, Mulhauser Fall Highlight Senior Night in Jadwin
February 11, 2023 | Wrestling
Princeton got wins from Patrick Glory, Quincy Monday and Kole Mulhauser, but Lehigh had the team victory Saturday night in Jadwin Gym, 24-12, as the Tigers closed their home schedule.
Princeton honored its seven seniors prior to the match. The group includes 2022 NCAA finalists in Glory and Monday, NCAA qualifiers a year ago in Travis Stefanik and Marshall Keller, as well as Grant Cuomo, Jake Marsh and Travis Tavoso. It's a group that helped deliver Princeton its first Ivy League title since 1986, in 2020.
"It's been a lot of reflection looking back on where we started," Monday said. "We've made a lot of memories here, a lot of great memories, and it's crazy to see it all winding down, but I can look back and be happy with all that we did here. Our first day stepping on campus, we had a vision for what we wanted to achieve for this program, elevate it to a new height, and looking back, I think we really did that. Now, (we're) passing that torch on and trying to create that legacy for the next group of guys. I think we definitely left our mark and that's something we can be proud of forever."
The Tigers will head to Bucknell Friday for their dual-match season finale before the EIWA Championships head to Penn on the first weekend of March.
Glory, ranked No. 2 in the nation by the NCAA Coaches panel, opened the day with a 12-5 win over Carter Bailey at 125, getting two first-period takedowns to lead 5-2 after the first three minutes on the way to the win.
Lehigh then went on a four-match run to build a 15-3 lead. No. 5-ranked Connor McGonagle was a 7-1 winner over Anthony Clark at 133, getting a takedown in each of the first two periods to lead 5-0 after five minutes. At 141, No. 23 Malyke Hines picked up a tech-fall win over Christopher Martino, 15-0, that ended early in the second period. At 149, No. 32 Max Brignola was a 4-2 winner over Marshall Keller in a sudden-victory period, with Brignola getting a takedown in the extra frame after he had a second-period reversal and Keller tied it with an escape in each of the last two periods. At 157, No. 4 Josh Humphreys was a 12-2 major-decision winner over Ty Whalen, using a strong second period to open up what was a 2-0 lead by scoring nine points on a penalty point, a reversal, a takedown and a four-point near-fall to lead 11-1 entering the third.
No. 4-ranked Monday broke the Lehigh run with a 6-1 win over Luca Frinzi at 165, getting a first-period takedown and leading the rest of the way as Princeton pulled within 15-6.
At 174, Mulhauser trailed 3-1 entering the third before getting an escape, a takedown and then the pin in short order in the third to win the match in 6:29.
Lehigh closed the match with wins in the final three bouts. At 184, No. 19 Tate Samuelson had a takedown in each of the first two periods against Nate Dugan on the way to a 6-1 win. In a matchup of top-20 wrestlers, No. 2 Michael Beard had an 11-4 decision against No. 19 Luke Stout at 197, getting a first-period takedown as one of his four on the match.
The second of two bouts matching NCAA Coaches-ranked wrestlers followed, with No. 30 Nathan Taylor getting a 5-0 win over No. 31 Travis Stefanik at heavyweight, getting a second-period reversal and a third-period takedown before adding the riding-time point.
