Men's Volleyball Downed by No. 3 Penn State
February 17, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
University Park, PA - The Princeton men's volleyball team put up a great fight against No. 3 Penn State on Friday night in University Park, but ultimately fell to the EIVA opponent, 0-3 (18-25, 23-25, 12-25) in a hard-fought match.
Brady Wedbush led the match in kills with 11, and Henry Wedbush continues to lead the team in assists, totaling 23 against the Nittany Lions.
Defensively, Ryan Vena came up with four, big blocks and Henry Wedbush recorded five digs.
Set One
The first set saw an early lead from Penn State that the Tigers struggled to overcome. The Nittany Lions took a 10-5 lead over Princeton by a five point scoring run.
A kill from Ben Harrington closed the gap by four, with Penn State leading 18-14.
An ace from Harrington and a pair of kills from Brady Wedbush were not enough for the Tigers to get ahead, and Penn State managed to take a lead that they wouldn't lose. The first set concluded with a score of 18-25 in favor of the Lions to put Penn State ahead 1-0.
Set Two
In set two, Princeton put up a strong fight, but ultimately fell just short to Penn State. Nyherowo Omene had a strong presence in set two, recording six kills total to help the Tigers.
A Henry Wedbush service ace put Princeton just behind Penn State 7-11, and back to pack points featuring a Brady Wedbush kill had Princeton down by just three points at 12-15.
Princeton continued to chase the Lions in hopes of evening the score, but Penn State continued to hold the lead throughout set two, 22-19.
Despite three kills from Ryan Vena and more from Brady Wedbush to put the Tigers behind just 23-24, a set-point kill from Penn State's, Toby Ezeonu, handed the Lions another set won, 23-25.
Set Three
The third set was a back-and-forth scoring run for both Princeton and Penn State. A service ace from Harrington tied things up 6-6, and the Tigers refused to let up.
Back-to-back kills from Omene and Brady Wedbush put Princeton just behind 11-13, and another Ben Harrington service ace was enough to tie set three 15-15.
Soon after a strong scoring run by the Lions, Penn State jumped ahead 20-16. A Henry Wedbush ace would put Princeton jut behind at 18-20, but a determined Penn State offense and several Princeton errors would be enough to seal the match for the Lions on their home court.
Penn State won set three 25-20, and ultimately took the match to defeat Princeton 3-0.
The Tigers will be back in action again tomorrow afternoon to face Penn State a second time at 4:00 p.m.
