No. 3 Princeton Takes Down Manhattan, Looks Ahead To Maryland
February 21, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
The first shock at Sherrerd Field Tuesday came about 90 minutes before face-off between No. 3 Princeton and Manhattan, when a gale force wind blew a table over the balcony railing and had it slam down on the metal stands. The second shock came 12 seconds into the game, when Manhattan took a lead that would last into the third quarter.
Would there be a third shock? Would the Tigers get knocked off on their home field by the Jaspers, who came into the game as the top scoring defense team in the country with a goalie who continued his early season wizardry.
The answer came decisively in the third quarter, when Princeton turned things completely around. By game's end it was Princeton 14, Manhattan 9, and the Tigers could look ahead to Saturday's game at home at 1 against Maryland in a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinal.
Manhattan came into the game 2-0, with a 9-5 win over St. John's and 6-5 against Navy. Jasper goalie Joseph Persico had made 36 saves in those two wins, and he made 11 more in the first half, which ended with Manhattan in front 5-4.
The key moments in the game came early in the third quarter. Princeton was able to kill off a one-minute non-releasable penalty, and Michael Gianforcaro made three big saves of his own to keep it a one-goal deficit. Alex Slusher finally tied it for Princeton two minutes into the third, and within 2:05 Braedon Saris and Christian Ronda would add scores of their own, putting the Tigers up 7-5. Princeton would not trail again.
Princeton would outscore Manhattan 8-2 in the third quarter, making it a 12-7 game heading into the fourth. After Manhattan scored twice to make it 12-9, Alexander Vardaro and Weston Carpenter put it away with the final two of the night.
Princeton again rotated its goalies, with Griffen Rakower in the first half (eight saves, keeping the Tigers in it) and Gianforcaro in the second (five saves). Princeton also used two face-off men, as Tyler Sandoval won 8 of 14 and Koby Ginder won 8 of 12.
