Princeton Falls To Maryland 11-5
February 25, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
It was a day of defense. Well, defense and frustration, which often go together. For 30 minutes, both Princeton and Maryland felt that frustration on the offensive end. In the end, it stayed with Princeton the whole way.
Defending NCAA champion Maryland took control in the third quarter and defeated Princeton 11-5 in front of 1,753 fans at Sherrerd Field. The game was a rematch of last year's national semifinals.
Princeton has now been in double figures in goals in 30 times in its last 32 games, and both times it has been held below 10 have come against Maryland, including the semifinals. The Tigers, now 2-1 on the young season, host Georgetown this coming Saturday at 1.
It was a 2-0 Maryland lead at the end of the first quarter and a 3-1 game at the break as both defenses swarmed every pass, every clear and every dodge. The first half featured numerous shot clock violations by both teams and several other possessions that came close to being violations, as neither team could really get any easy offense.
It changed in the third quarter, when Maryland outscored Princeton 7-2 to build a 10-2 advantage after three. The Terps were helped by four Tiger penalties, which led to 5:30 of extra man time of the 15 minutes of the third quarter.
Princeton was led by Coulter Mackesy, who had three of the team's five goals. Sam English and Weston Carpenter also had goals for Princeton, and Carpenter now has one in all three games this year, after having none prior to this season.
Maryland goalie Brian Ruppel made 14 saves in his college debut. Princeton's two goalies, Griffen Rakower and Michael Gianforcaro, combined for 16 saves.
