Chmielewski Named Ivy Pitcher Of The Week
March 20, 2023 | Baseball
If ever a team needed a starting pitcher to come up big, it was Princeton this past Saturday afternoon. The Tigers were playing their third game — not of the weekend but of the day after weather forced a backlog — and now it was up to Tom Chmielewski to pick up his tired teammates, espeically those out in the bullpen.
Chmielewski, a junior lefty, did just that, going all nine innings to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 win over Cincinnati, giving the Tigers their second win of the day and sixth win of the season. For his efforts, Chmielewski was named the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week.
Cincinnati scored single runs in the first and second, and that was it, as Chmielewski shut the door from there. He allowed three hits in the first two innings and then only three more over the next seven innings, and he struck out 10 while walking only two and throwing an efficient 115 pitches. Princeton got one back in the fifth and took the lead with two in the seventh, and then Chmielewski closed it out by retiring the final eight Bearcats, including the last two in the bottom of the ninth on strikeouts.
Princeton is off until Saturday, when it opens its Ivy League season with a doubleheader against Dartmouth, followed by a single game Sunday.
