March 26, 2023 | Softball
Five of the first six on the new Ivy League season have gone to the Princeton softball team as the Tigers closed out the second league series of the spring with a doubleheader split Sunday at Brown.
Sunday's first game went to Brown 4-0 with Bears leadoff hitter Jasmine Hsiao getting three of the team's eight hits and driving in all four runs. The first of those came on an RBI double in the second inning before Hsiao pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the fourth and added a solo homer in the sixth.
Serena Starks, Adrienne Chang and Cate Bade split Princeton's three hits in the game.
Game two saw Princeton win 5-2 with Julia Dumais driving in a pair of runs and finishing as one of four Tigers with two hits in the nightcap, along with Grace Jackson, Lauren Pappert and Caitlin Bish.
Dumais opened the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the first, and after Brown got a run in each of its first two at-bats to take what became its only lead of the game at 2-1, where it stayed into the fourth inning.
In the fourth, Princeton got a base hit from Chang, a double from Jackson to pick up pinch runner Courtney Harrison, and a Pappert base hit to bring home Jackson and retake the lead, 3-2.
Princeton's final two runs came in the seventh inning, with Bish getting a leadoff double, Dumais getting a two-out double to score Bish, and Allison Ha reaching on a dropped fly ball in centerfield to pick up Dumais for the final run.
Brielle Wright got the win in the circle, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing two runs, none earned, on two hits and four walks, striking out one. Meghan Harrington entered in the fourth inning with one out and runners on first and second, getting the next two batters to squelch the rally. Harrington finished with 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief, allowing just a hit and striking out two.
The Tigers will make the short trip to Rider for a Wednesday pair before going to Penn next weekend to resume Ivy League play.
