Women's Lacrosse Edged By Dartmouth, 15-14
April 22, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
A back-and-forth game came down to the wire in Hanover, but Princeton was one goal short in a 15-14 loss to Dartmouth.
Â
The Tigers were dominant in the second quarter, scoring all six goals in the period to turn what was a 5-2 Dartmouth lead into an 8-5 edge at halftime.
Â
However, a five-goal Dartmouth run over the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth turned a three-goal Princeton lead into a two-goal Big Green advantage that the Tigers could not answer. Princeton could twice close to within one, but a late turnover on a free position attempt denied the Tigers the tying goal and allowed the Big Green to run out the clock.
Â
With the loss, Princeton falls to 6-8 overall and 3-3 inside the Ivy League. The Big Green are now also 6-8 overall and 3-3 in Ivy play.
Â
Kari Buonanno had five goals in the game, giving her 102 career points. She added three draw controls and two ground balls. Nina Montes (3g, 1a) had a four-point game.
Â
Samantha DeVito had four draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Â
Gisele Todd made 12 saves in goal for the Big Green. Katie Elders and Katina Christensen each had four goals.
Â
The Big Green jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, Princeton held off the scoreboard for the first 11:35 of the game before a Kari Buonanno free position got the Tigers on the board.
Â
The Big Green regained their four-goal lead for a brief moment with a Boo DeWitt goal with 1:38 left in the opening quarter, but Nina Montes stepped into a free position of her own with 0:18 left. The Tigers almost tacked on one more before the end of the first period, but Buonanno had a last-second shot hit the pipe.
Â
Buonanno was true on her first offering of the second quarter, cashing in her second free position of the afternoon 2:00 into the second stanza. Just 0:51 later, Montes scored Princeton's first goal in the run of play, dancing by a defender at the top of the arc and scoring.
Â
Haven Dora would pull Princeton even for the first time since the game was 0-0 with a slick dodge from the left wing just past the midway mark of the second quarter.
Â
It took just 0:32 more of lacrosse for the Tigers to take their first lead of the game. Kate Mulham had her shot deflected just a hair on its way to goal, and the change of direction fooled the Dartmouth keeper for a 6-5 Princeton lead.
Â
Mulham needed just 0:24 to net her second goal of the game, and this time she fooled her defender with a quick crossover and switch of hands to bounce her second of the game five-hole for a 7-5 lead with 5:56 remaining in the first half.
Â
The Tigers found one more before the end of the half – literally. A Dartmouth foul with 1.2 seconds left resulted in a free position for the Tigers and Lane Calkins came fresh off the bench and uncorked a low bouncer through the five-hole before the buzzer sounded for an 8-5 Princeton lead at halftime.
Â
Katina Christensen finally got the Big Green back on the board, ending a scoreless run of 17:39 for the Princeton defense with a score 1:01 into the third quarter.
Â
Kari Buonanno countered quickly, netting her third free position goal of the game – and her 100th career point in the process – 1:45 later. Nina Montes would secure a hat trick of her own 0:32 later with a crafty dodge which left a defender in the dust.
Â
The Big Green put together a mini-run to close within a goal, scoring three times in 2:37 to make it a 10-9 game.
Â
Grace Tauckus single-handedly ended that run with two of her own in a span of 0:36. Both goals were well-designed plays, the first a give-and-go with Nina Montes and the second a well-timed feed from behind the cage sent in by Meghan Curran.
Â
Christensen would score her third of the game with 4:17 left in the third quarter to get the Big Green within two once more. It appeared that Nina Montes had regained a three-goal lead for the Tigers with 1:47 left, but the goal was waved off for a crease violation. The Big Green would capitalize, with Dewitt scoring with 0:54 left in the third to make it a one-goal game entering the final frame.
Â
Katie Elders tied the contest for the first time since it was 5-5 in the second quarter with a goal 1:13 into the fourth quarter. Just over a minute later, Elders scored again to give the Big Green a 13-12 lead.
Â
The Big Green's run became a 5-0 spurt with Christensen's fourth goal of the game 4:33 into the fourth quarter, in the process she gave Dartmouth a 14-12 lead.
Â
Kari Buonanno brought Princeton back within one with 8:45 left in the fourth, cashing in her fourth free position goal of the game. It appeared the Tigers had tied the game moments later, but Kate Mulham was called for a charge while shooting the ball into the net and being knocked to the ground. Dartmouth again capitalized on a 50-50 call, scoring on its ensuing possession with a goal from Elders with 6:54 left in regulation.
Â
Kari Buonanno scored with 2:13 left to get the Tigers within one, finishing her fifth free position goal of the day. The Tigers had a chance to find the equalizer late, but Haven Dora had a free position denied and the Big Green were able to run out the clock.
