Green, Fantinelli Earn Ivy Major Awards as Three are Named All-League
April 27, 2023 | Men's Golf
After his win in his Ivy League Championships debut, Princeton freshman Riccardo Fantinelli has earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors, and with the team's second Ivy title in the last three years it has been awarded, head coach Will Green has been named the Ivy League Coach of the Year.
The honors for Fantinelli and Green are on top of three All-Ivy League recognitions for Tiger men's golfers, with rookie Riccardo Fantinelli, junior Jackson Fretty and sophomore William Huang all earning first-team All-Ivy recognition.
Fantinelli is the fourth Tiger to earn the Ivy League Rookie of the Year award since its inception in 2009, joining Quinn Prchal '17 (2013), senior teammate Max Ting (2019), and sophomore teammate Huang (2022), giving Princeton back-to-back Ivy League Rookie of the Year winners. It's the first time Green has been named Ivy Coach of the Year, with the award having been inaugurated in 2015.
Princeton had five top-10 finishes as a team between the fall and the spring, closing the spring regular season with three such finishes, including the William & Mary Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate (third), the Princeton Invitational (third), and the Ivy League Championship tournament (first).
Fantinelli won medalist honors at the Ivy tournament, delivering the program its 15th medalist finish since the Ivy League Championships began as its own tournament in 1975. Compiling a 72.83 stroke average between the fall and the spring, Fantinelli has posted top-10 finishes in each of his last three tournaments, winning the individual event a The Prestige in California before placing 10th at the Princeton Invitational and winning the Ivy tournament.
Fretty, a sociology major who also earns the team's Academic All-Ivy nod, is an All-Ivy Leaguer for the first time, placing third and tying the course record at the Stanwich Club with a second-round 66 along the way. Fretty, with a 75.14 stroke average between the fall and the spring, closed the spring regular season with two top-10 finishes, tying for seventh at the Princeton Invitational before going to the Ivy tournament.Â
Huang, a second-team All-Ivy honoree last season, had a 74.38 stroke average between the fall and the spring, turning in two top-five finishes with a fourth-place finish at the Georgetown Invitational and the Ivy League Championships.
The trio of Tiger honorees helped the team to an 18-stroke win over runner-up Columbia at the Ivy League Championships, giving Princeton two of the last three Ivy team titles awarded and earning the Ivy's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, held May 15-17. The regional assignments will be announced May 3 at 1 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
