May 02, 2023 | Baseball
PRINCETON – Tom Chmielewski has been named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week as the Baseball Team preps for Rutgers Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Chmielewski retired nine straight hitters after an error in the first inning on Friday vs. Yale. After another error to begin the fifth stanza, the junior pitcher got a pop up and double play.
Yale's Alec Atkinson broke up Chmielewski's no-hit bid on a one-out single in the next half frame.
How did the Princeton ace react?
He picked off Atkinson.
The home team got a runner to third base in the eighth stanza, but a flyout ended the threat. Chmielewski saved his best for last, striking out the side in the ninth inning including the final two looking for his ninth and 10th punchouts of the game.
It was the third complete game and second shutout of the season for Chmielewski as he lowered his ERA to 2.93. This is the second time the junior has been named Ivy Pitcher of the Week.
The baseball squad make the trip to Piscataway, N.J. to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Bainton Field on Wednesday night at 5 p.m.
Princeton is 21-18 this season and 12-6 in the Ivy League with victories over Georgia, Duke, Richmond, Cincinnati, SC Upstate, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Monmouth, Columbia, Rider, NJIT and Yale.
Penn (13-5), Harvard (13-5) are in front of Princeton (12-6) and Columbia (11-7) at the top of the Ivy League standings. Penn, Harvard, and Princeton are locked into the Ivy League Tournament while Columbia needs one victory over Penn to clinch the final spot.
The Tigers needs to sweep Brown this weekend while Penn (vs. Columbia) and Harvard (vs. Yale) need to lose twice for Princeton to win the Ivy regular season title and host the conference tournament.
Scott Bandura leads the Ivy League in batting average (.377), on-base percentage (.470) while sitting second in slugging (.656). He leads Princeton in runs (37), hits (57), total bases (99), and stolen bases (13) as well. Bandura is having an all-time season as he's only 10 hits shy of the program record, 10 shy of the runs mark, three shy of the extra-base hit record and will likely become the seventh Tiger to collect 100 total bases in a season.
Noah Granet is the other Tiger hitting over .300, earning a .371 mark in 16 games. Eight of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases. Jake Bold (.297) and Nick DiPietrantonio (.297) are just shy of the .300 mark. Princeton has seven players who start regularly that are hitting at least .278. The team has already set a record with 53 home runs while its 144 extra base hits and .471 slugging percentage are third highest in its history.
Kyle Vinci has been one of the best power hitters in the country as his 17 home runs are 17th in the nation while his .46 home runs per game are 10th. His 17 four baggers are the most in a single season by a Princeton Tiger while his 49 RBI are second, four behind Drew Stratton's 53 in 1985.
Justin Kim paces Princeton in ERA with a 2.88 mark in 40 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
Jacob Faulkner has appeared in 22 contests, two shy of the Princeton all-time mark while he's three saves short of the program record as well. Kim and Faulkner along with Jackson Emus combined to throw the 15th no-hitter by Princeton and the first since 2008 in a 9-1 victory over Yale in game two of the doubleheader on Friday.
Rutgers is 26-18 this season with wins over Campbell, George Mason, St. Joseph's, Wagner, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Rider, Lafayette, NJIT, Michigan State, Hofstra, Maryland, Seton Hall, Marist, Michigan, Monmouth, Northwestern, St. John's and Purdue.
The Scarlet Knights have four players hitting over .300 led by Ryan Lasko (.326). Evan Sleight leads the team in home runs (11) while Chris Brito paces the squad with 39 RBI. Christian Coppola has been the best starter for Rutgers with a 3.60 ERA in nine starts.
