June 30, 2023 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight, Men's Rowing - Lightweight
PRINCETON – The Princeton Men's and Women's Lightweight Rowing Teams earned major IRA awards, the organization announced today.
Marty Crotty, the men's lightweight head coach, and Paul Rassam, the women's lightweight head coach, were named the IRA Coaches of the Year.
Both varsity eights for each team were named their respective IRA Crews of the Year.
The women's lightweight varsity eight came out fast, leading the field by over two seconds 500m in at the IRA National Championships.. At the halfway mark, the advantage had stretched to six seconds and the boat of Margaret Murphy, Sarah Fry, Lily Feinerman, Cecilia Sommerfeld, Kalena Blake, Daisy Devore, Hannah Höselbarth, Lina Schwartz and Sarah Polson were never threatened the rest of the way. Princeton finished with a 6:40.03, 6.2 seconds ahead of Stanford (6:46.31). It was the varsity eight's third consecutive IRA gold medal. That boat has not lost to another lightweight boat since the 2019 IRAs
Princeton finished with 72 points, 15 clear of Boston for the team title and IRA Commissioner's Cup. It's the second straight year that the Tigers have recorded the most points.
In the IRA Grand Final for the men's lightweight first varsity, the Tigers trailed by two one-hundreds of a second behind Harvard at the 500m but used a 1:25 split to go in front by 1.4 seconds. The Crimson closed the gap to under a half second with 500m left, but the boat of Adam Casler, Nick Aronow, Hidde Lycklama, George Dickinson, Ethan Abraham, Aaron Wenk, Reuben Cook, William Olson and David Van Velden pulled away, finishing with a 5:41.02, 1.8 seconds clear.
It was the first varsity eight title for Princeton at IRAs since 2010. The Tigers' wins in the 1V and 2V secured the IRA's President's Cup, awarded to the top point total for the men's lightweights. It's the sixth time the Tigers have done that, the last coming in 2010.
It marks the second time the same school has won both Lightweight National Championships (1997, Harvard/Radcliffe).
