MARSA, Malta – Princeton University men's tennis alumni Matija Pecotic '13 recently made history for Malta, winning gold medals in singles and doubles at the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE).
Pecotic took down No. 1 seed Lucas Catarina of Monaco, 6-1, 6-2, and won Malta's first gold medal in singles. He also teamed with Matthew Asciak in doubles, also winning gold after overcoming Sergis Kyratzis and Eleftherios Neo of Cyprus, 6-1, 6-4.

About GGSE
GSSE are a biennial multi-sport event, which originated from an idea of Bertie Muscat, a former member of the Maltese Olympic Committee Executive, in 1981. The Games came into fruition in 1985, when the first Games were hosted by San Marino. The Games are organized by and feature the National Olympic Committees of nine European small states which are also affiliated members of the European Olympic Committees (EOC).
The Games are held at the end of May or beginning of June and feature competition in nine Summer Olympic sports. From its initial forming at the 1984 Olympics through 2009, there were eight members. In 2009, Montenegro became the group's ninth member.
To be eligible for participation in these Games, members all have a population of less than one million people. Cyprus is the only exception. This is due to the fact that upon inception of these Games in 1984, its population was below one million.
