September 15, 2023 | Men's Soccer
DURHAM, N.H. - The Princeton University men's soccer team (1-2-0) fell to No. 21 ranked New Hampshire, 3-1, on Friday, Sept. 15 at Wildcat Stadium.Â
Sophomore Stephen Duncan scored his first goal as a Tiger in the first half.
Match Summary
First Half
In a slow start, no shots were taken until the 13th minute as the Tiger's defensive unit of Whit Gamblin, Stephen Duncan, Issa Mudashiru and Giuliano Fravolini Whitchurch put a stop to the Wildcat offense. On the offensive side of the ball, a 16th minute shot on goal by Daniel Ittycheria gave the Tigers the first scoring opportunity, but the sophomore was unable to best their keeper.  A free kick in the 21st minute gave the Tigers yet another scoring chance. This time, they capitalized and Stephen Duncan found a well-placed free kick from Nico Nee that he headed into the low center of the net (21:17). This goal not only gave the Tigers the early lead, but also tallied the first collegiate goal of Duncan's career.
"It felt awesome scoring my first collegiate goal in a massive game like that," said Stephen Duncan. "Unfortunately we did not get the result we wanted, but all credit goes to my teammates for setting me up in a good spot and my coaches for drawing up a play we practiced in training. I really panicked with my celebration but I knew I wanted to embrace with my brothers. Now we look forward to one our biggest rivals St. John's."
Nee continues to lead the team on offense with 4 points. A Wildcat corner kick in the last minute of the first half gave an equalizing scare, but Stephen Duncan put an end to this attempt. The Tigers held a 1-0 lead going into the half.Â
Second Half
Princeton came out of the half swinging with a left foot strike on target from Ian Nunez that was barely blocked by the Wildcat's goalkeeper. UNH found the lead from a penalty kick in the 65th minute and a goal in the 69th minute. The final goal for the Wildcats was scored in the 86th minute. The Tigers were unable to find the equalizer in the 21 minutes remaining. The Wildcats went on to win by one goal.
