September 19, 2023 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton men's soccer team (2-2-0) took down the Red Storm 3-2 this evening at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. The win tonight snaps a three game losing streak since the 2021 season against St. John's.
First Half
St. John's started the scoring early in the match when Macoumbe Ba put the first points on the scoreboard in the 7th minute. The Tiger offense responded quickly. It took all of 59 seconds to find the equalizer and Princeton found it through clinical ball movement that lead to Daniel Ittycheria's right-footed strike low and right into the back of the net. Assists on that goal were given to both Ryan Winkler and Nico Nee.
Walker Gillespie, the runner-up for leading goal scorer of the 2022 season, saw the field for the first time this year and clocked 27 minutes. James Wangsness also saw his first minutes of the 2023 season.
In the 30th minute, three shots in a row were taken from Vigilante, Gillespie, and Nee respectively, and all were blocked by the Red Storm defense. 6 Tigers found shooting opportunities in the first half
The Tigers and St. John's went into the half tied at 1.
Second Half
To begin the second half, Ittycheria found himself with another scoring opportunity in the 52nd minute off of a Sam Vigilante breakaway followed by a through ball. Ittycheria capitalized to take a 2-1 lead and also tallied his third goal of the season. He now leads the Tigers in goals scored this year with three.
St. John's wouldn't go away without a fight as Connor Mucchetti scored a goal on the Tiger's doorstep in the 59th minute. The match would now be tied at 2.
After the St. John's goal, Princeton dominated possession of the ball on offense. With only 4 minutes left in the match, Ian Nunez scored the first collegiate goal of his career off of a rebound from Nico Nee that gave the Tigers the win.Â
The Tigers would go on to win the match 3-2.

Coach Barlow's Post Game Statement
"Our guys were frustrated with the last two results. Tonight was a great opportunity to play another very good team who has had our number the last couple years and knocked us out of the NCAA tournament two years ago. I thought the energy and response to giving up the early goal was really good. I thought the guys bounced back very well and a number of guys had really good games."
