Bryant Defeats Football, 16-13, in Overtime
September 23, 2023 | Football
On a day when every pass and kick was an adventure, Bryant All-American placekicker Ethan Gettman hit a 38-yard field goal to tie the game with 1:37 to go in the fourth and then won it with a 37-yarder in the first overtime, giving the Bulldogs a 16-13 win over Princeton. The game was played in the wind and rain of Powers Field at Princeton Stadium as the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia went through the Northeast.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
With the rain and wind an obstacle to both offenses, neither team scored until late in the second quarter, when John Volker broke free for a 49-yard touchdown. A missed extra point made it 6-0 Tigers at intermission.
Â
Bryant cut the lead in half when Gettman nailed a 40-yarder with 2:31 left in the third, but Princeton answered with the best sustained drive either team would have, marching 86 yards in 12 plays and scoring on a Dareion Murphy five-yard run. Jeffrey Sexton's extra point built it to 13-3 with 12 minutes to go.
Â
The Bulldogs would rally, though, getting a touchdown with 6:37 to go when Kanor Lathrop took a short pass from Zevi Eckhaus and bulled his way into the end zone, completing an 11-yard play and a 65-yard drive. Suddenly, the Princeton lead was 13-10.
Â
Princeton was forced to punt on its next possession, but the snap was mishandled by Tiger punter Brady Clark, setting up Bryant on the Princeton 15. The Tiger defense held, forcing Gettman to kick his 38-yard FG to send the teams to overtime.
Â
Bryant had the first possession, which ended in the field goal. Princeton got nine yards on two Volker runs to get to the 16, but Bryant held on third and fourth downs to end the game.
Â
WHAT THE BOX SCORE TELLS YOU
Ozzie Nicholas had 15 tackles for Princeton, while Will Perez and Liam Johnson had nine more. Volker finished with 149 yards on just 18 carries, giving him his first career 100-yard day. Nicholas matched his career high with 15 stops, tying his mark from vs. Penn last year.Â
Â
The teams combined for more rushing yards (250) than passing yards (236).
Â
There were a combined five fumbles in the game.
Â
WHAT THE BOX SCORE DOESN'T TELL YOU
The loss snapped a 17-game non-conference winning streak for Princeton.
Â
Volker became the first Princeton player with more than 100 yards rushing in a game since Collin Eaddy against Brown in 2021.
