Princeton Falls To No. 3 Northwestern Despite Career-Best 14 Saves From Thompson
September 24, 2023 | Field Hockey
The wind was blowing rather gently off Lake Michigan, about 100 yards beyond Northwestern's Lakeside Field. The sun was out, and the temperature was hovering around 70.
It was a far cry from the usual conditions that can be found here. Lakeside Field is renowned for its cold sternness most times of the year; on this day, it was Northwestern that made things miserable for the visiting team.
Northwestern, ranked third nationally, defeated Princeton 4-0, getting one goal in each quarter, the first three of which were on penalty corners. Robyn Thompson had an incredible day in goal, making 14 saves as the Wildcats outshot Princeton 26-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Northwestern jumped on top with its first corner goal, which came 3:35 into the game. Liz Agatucci came within millimeters of tying it a few minutes later, when her reverse shot just missed the far post.
Northwestern got its second corner goal with nine minutes to go in the half, making it 2-0 at the brea. The third goal came with 3:40 left in the third quarter, and then Northwestern tacked on one more, with 1:32 to go.
THINGS THE BOX SCORE DOESN'T SAY
* Thompson's 14 saves were four more than her previous career best.
* Princeton was shut out for the first time since the 2018 NCAA semifinal loss to Maryland.
* The game was a homecoming for two Lake Forest natives, defender Gracie McGowan and midfielder Clare Brennan. After opening its Ivy League season with a 2-1 win over Columbia Friday afternoon, Princeton flew to Chicago Saturday morning and then had dinner Saturday night at the Brennan's house.
UP NEXT
Princeton flies home after the game and then is off until Friday, when it takes on Cornell at 4 on Bedford Field.
