NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13) setback against Yale Saturday night inside the John J. Lee Amphitheater and moved to 3-1 in Ivy League play.
Sophomore Lucia Scalamandre led the way for the Tigers, finishing with a team-high 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, along with a match-high six blocks and two digs. Freshman Sydney Draper recorded her fourth-straight and seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 38 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Sydney Bold tallied a team-best 20 digs.
The first set began evenly matched, but an 8-0 run by Yale gave the Bulldogs a 13-5 lead. A freshman Erin McNair kill halted Yale's run, and led a 3-0 run for the Tigers that made it 13-8. Yale would soon re-take control of the set, using a 4-0 run to surge ahead 21-11, then go on to win the set 25-16.
Princeton took an early lead in the second set, with a kill by senior Kathleen Bishop putting Princeton up 5-3. The descended into a back-and-forth battle, until the Bulldogs used a pair of 3-0 runs and jumped ahead, 14-10. Yale remained in control from there, closing the set out on a 4-0 run and winning it 25-18.
The Tigers showed resilience in the third set, using a 4-0 run ignited by a Draper kill to surge ahead, 9-4. A Bulldog service error followed by a freshman Ava Harrington kill put Princeton ahead, 12-8, then the two teams would battle back-and-forth, reaching a stalemate at 18-18. A freshman Kamryn Chaney kill followed by a double block by junior Shelby Fulton and freshman Ava Harrington created some separation at 21-19, then a Yale attacking error gave Princeton set point at 24-21. A Scalamandre kill sealed it for Princeton, as they prevailed in the set 25-21.
Set four saw Yale jump out to a 13-6 lead, but a kill by Fulton followed by a Chaney service ace briefly halted the Bulldogs' momentum, making it 13-8. Yale responded with an 8-0 run and took a 21-8 lead. While a kill by Scalamandre sparked a 4-0 Princeton run, it was Yale who would win the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-1.
