Princeton Takes Down Brown, Sets Up Showdown In Cambridge
October 11, 2024 | Field Hockey
When Friday afternoon's results were over, there were two 4-0 teams in the Ivy League field hockey race, and they will meet this coming Saturday at Harvard, where the winner will take a giant step towards an league title and the hosting role for the Ivy tournament.
Princeton got to 4-0 by outlasting Brown in a game that had a combined 20 penalty corners, 11 for Princeton and nine for Brown. All four Tiger goals came off corners, as did Brown's second.
It was Ottilie Sykes who got the Tigers going 12:25 into the first quarter, and then it was Ella Cashman who made it 2-0 a little more than a minute later. It was 2-0 at halftime, and then came the third quarter.Scoreless for 12:35 to start the game. Then two Tiger goals in 1:34, both off corners. This one was Ottilie Sykes. It was a 15-minute stretch that took nearly 45 minutes to play, with 12 of the game's 20 corners, 10 of the games 26 shots and three of the game's six goals. Brown scored first on the only non-corner goal, which came less than two minutes into the quarter, and suddenly a comfortable lead wasn't anymore. And then it was again, three minutes later, when Beth Yeager rocketed one of her own. Clem Houlden took a rebound of a Yeager shot off yet another corner and blasted it at the cage, and now it was 4-1 Princeton at the end of the third.
Before Princeton and Harvard can worry about their matchup next weekend, both teams have a game Sunday. Princeton's is at home against Delaware (1), while Harvard flies to Chicago to take on No. 2 Northwestern, who beat Princeton 3-2 in Princeton earlier this season.
Princeton is now 7-4 on the season — 6-0 on Friday's and 1-4 on Sundays.
