Sykes' Goal In 2nd OT Gives Princeton 2-1 Win Over Delaware
October 13, 2024 | Field Hockey
Beth Yeager scored on Princeton's first penalty corner of the day; Princeton didn't score on its next 11; and then Ottilie Sykes scored on the last one.
And with that, the Princeton field hockey team could look ahead to this coming Saturday in Cambridge.
Sykes drilled home the game-winner with 1:32 left in the second overtime to give 16th-ranked Princeton a 2-1 win over Delaware in a highly entertaining game on Bedford Field Sunday afternoon. The win improved Princeton to 8-4 on the season and turned the page on the schedule to a showdown at Harvard Saturday at noon.
Princeton and Harvard are both 4-0 in the Ivy League. The winner of the game will not mathematically clinch the league title or the hosting role in the upcoming Ivy League tournament, though it will take a giant step in the direction of both.
It was Yeager who scored the first goal of the day, way back in the middle of the first quarter, also off of a corner. This time, assists went to inserter Pru Lindsey and Izzy Morgan, who stopped it for Yeager, who blasted it off of van Eijck's stick and into the goal.
It stayed that way until Delaware tied it early in the third, which set the stage of the Sykes winner. It was the second-straight year that Princeton had defeated Delaware 2-1 in overtime, after Bridget Murphy scored the game-winner in 2023.

Princeton had a 21-5 edge in shots against Delaware, as well as a 13-0 edge in penalty corners, the final one of which saw Grace Schulze insert the ball to Sykes, who trapped it and ripped into the far corner of the Blue Hen cage to end things. Delaware goalie Cecile van Eijck had robbed Yeager on another corner try at the end of the first OT, but she had no chance on the low drive from Sykes.Ottilie for the win!!!! pic.twitter.com/54vGiyH32Z
