Cashman's OT Goal Gives Princeton Huge Win Over Harvard 2-1
October 19, 2024 | Field Hockey
At the start of the fourth quarter of Saturday's Ivy League field hockey showdown in Cambridge between unbeatens Princeton and Harvard, the visitors seemed like they might be in for a very long ride home. Ella Cashman had a different kind of ride in mind.
Cashman, Princeton's unsung hero all season and a weapon all over the field, rallied Princeton with a fourth-quarter goal to tie it and an overtime goal to win it, giving the Tigers a huge 2-1 win over their rival Crimson. Instead of dejectedly getting on the bus for the ride back home, Cashman got a ride off the field on the shoulders of her teammates.
With the win, Princeton is now 5-0 in the league and in need of only one win (or one Harvard loss) in the final two Ivy games to win at least a share of the championship and the top seed and the host role for the Ivy League tournament. Princeton, who had already clinched its Ivy tournament spot before the game began, came in ranked 15th, while Harvard came in at No. 10.
Beth Yeager assisted on both of Cashman's goals, the first with 11:16 left in the fourth quarter and then the winner 4:23 into the overtime, both on penalty corners. For Yeager, the two assists gave her 100 career points, making her the 12th player in program history to reach that mark.
The tone of the day was set early, when Harvard's goalie Tessa Shahbo made three huge saves, keeping it a 0-0 game. Harvard broke through first, scoring with 2:11 left in the first quarter. Would the Tigers get the tying goal? It looked like Ottilie Sykes had in the third quarter, but the goal was waved off after the ball had made contact with a Princeton player before the shot. To the fourth it went 1-0 Harvard.
The first Tiger goal was set up by a long run from Talia Schenck, who ended up being taken down in the circle to draw the corner. Yeager put the ball right on Cashman's stick for the tying goal. The winner came exactly the same way, Yeager to Cashman, setting off a big Tiger celebration.
Princeton returns home to take on Maryland Friday and Dartmouth Sunday, and a win over the Big Green would cement the host spot in the Ivy tournament. Princeton still has a home game against Yale Nov. 2 in the regular season finale.

The score on a glorious day on Berylson Field was the reverse of last year's Ivy tournament final, when Harvard beat Princeton 2-1 on a goal with 34 seconds to go in regulation. If the two teams are to meet again in another Ivy tournament game, it'll have a hard time matching up to that one and this one.Ella from Beth again!!!!!
