A - About
The 2024 Princeton field hockey team has 24 players — 15 returnees from last year’s team, seven freshmen, one returnee from the 2022 team (who happened to play in the Summer Olympics this year) and one returnee from the 2022 team who was hurt one minute into Game 2 a year ago (and who happened to be the leading returning goal scorer heading into last season). There are 12 American players and 12 international players (10 from England; one each from Australia and Germany).
B – Big Ten
Princeton is 1-2 this season against Big Ten teams, and all three games have ended with a 3-2 score. Princeton defeated Rutgers and lost to Northwestern and Penn State.
C – Close
The last eight Princeton-Maryland games have all been decided by one goal, including last year’s, when Ottilie Sykes scored with 34 seconds left to give the Tigers a 3-2 win in College Park. Prior to that, Princeton and Maryland played five straight overtime games.
D – Defense
Princeton’s defense, which has allowed an Ivy-low 17 goals this year, held Harvard to one goal after the Crimson had averaged 4.5 per game in their first four Ivy games and had at least two in 11 straight games. Princeton held Harvard to seven shots, or less than half the league-best 15.3 Harvard averaged coming into the game.
E – Ella
Ella Cashman has three goals in the last three games, including both goals at Harvard this past weekend. She had one goal in the first 10 games of the season.
F – Freshmen
Princeton has started at least three freshmen in every game.
G – Green
Princeton has a 34-8-2 edge in the series against Dartmouth, with 11 straight wins. The last two games have been decided by one goal, a 1-0 Princeton win at Bedford Field in 2022 and a 2-1 win in Hanover a year ago.
H – History
Beth Yeager has nine goals and nine assists for the season. Should she get one more of each, she’d become the fourth Princeton player in the last 20 years to have double figures in both in the same season (Clara Roth, Michelle Cesan twice, Katie Reinprect twice).
I – Ivy League
Princeton is the first team to have clinched a spot in the four-team Ivy League tournament. The Tigers need one win in their last two Ivy games (or one Harvard loss in its last two games) to clinch home field for the tournament and at least a tie for the title.
J – Just Three
Princeton has started the same three on defense all season — Clem Houlden, Gracie McGowan and Ottilie Sykes. The last time Princeton had three defenders start every game in a full season was 2016.
K – Korners
Okay, penalty corners are technically spelled with a “C,” but in the statcrew program, the code is a “K.” Princeton’s last eight goals have all come on penalty corners, and the Tigers are now 13 for 86 for the season. Princeton’s opponents are 8 for 67.

L – Late Game Heroics
Princeton has played 13 games, and in four of those game, a team trailing at halftime has won the game. In three of those games, a team trailing at the end of the third quarter has won the game (Princeton over Rutgers and Harvard, Penn State over Princeton; the other game was Northwestern over Princeton).
M – Maryland
Princeton and Maryland first met in 1981. The Terps lead the all-time series 26-11-1.
N – National Rankings
Princeton is ranked 13th this week in the NFHCA coaches’ poll. Maryland is ranked sixth. In the RPI rankings, Princeton is also 13th, while Maryland is fifth.
O – Olympians
Princeton’s Beth Yeager and Maryland’s Emma Deberdine were teammates on the United States Olympic team this past summer in Paris.
P – Pride
Princeton field hockey will be celebrating Pride during the game against Maryland.
Q – Quarterly
Maryland has outscored its opponents 13-1 in the third quarter and 12-5 in the fourth quarter. Maryland has scored nine goals in the first half and 26 after halftime (including one in OT) in its 14 games.
R – Robyn
Goalie Robyn Thompson is sixth all-time at Princeton in career wins with 34 and seventh all-time at Princeton is career shutouts with 12, one away from tying Allison Nemeth for fifth.
S – Schulze
Grace Schulze is second on the team with five assists and 11 points (3G, 5A). Schulze, the main inserter on penalty corners, has one assist in three straight games after having two for the season prior.
T – Titles
Princeton field hockey has won 27 Ivy League championships, which is more than the other seven league teams combined. It’s also tied with Harvard women’s squash for the most Ivy League championships won by any women’s team in any sport. Harvard has won the second-most number of field hockey titles, with seven.
U – University
Princeton has been ranked as the No. 1 academic university in the United States by US News and World Report for the past 14 consecutive years, including in the new rankings that came out for this year.
V – Veterans
Princeton’s senior class features six players: Clare Brennan (F), Aimee Jungfer (M), Gracie McGowan (D), Grace Schulze (F), Robyn Thompson (G), Lily Webb (F). Those six have combined for 330 games played, with 142 starts between them.
W - Wins
Princeton is 9-4 on the season. Its record by days of the week: Friday (6-0), Saturday (1-0), Sunday (2-4).
X - X factor
Beth Yeager has four overtime goals and an overtime assist (last weekend at Harvard to Ella Cashman) in her career.
Y – Yeager
Beth Yeager was a first-team All-American and the Ivy League’s Offensive Player of the Year in each of her first two seasons before taking the 2023-24 academic year off from Princeton to compete with the United States national team in Olympic qualifying and then the Olympic Games, where she started every game for the USA. She currently leads the Ivy League in goals, assists and points. She also has at least one point in 11 straight games and is a three-time Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week.
Z – Zinged
Beth Yeager reached 100 career points in the game at Harvard, making her the 12th player in program history to reach the milestone. If she gets to 103 points, she would move all the way up into a tie with Allison Evans for eighth place.
