Men's Hockey Topples Yale, 4-1, In Ben Syer's First Win As Head Coach
November 15, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Tigers are in the win column!
Â
First-year head coach Ben Syer recorded his first career win in style as his team dialed up a team effort from start to finish in a 4-1 win at Yale.
Â
Brendan Gorman had a goal and an assist, while David Jacobs had two assists as the first line led the way and Ethan Pearson (21 saves) made a 4-0 lead stand up en route to the win
Â
Princeton is now 1-2-0 on the season with four points in ECAC play. Yale drops to 2-2-1 overall with five points in the ECAC standings.
Â
Princeton had a decided edge in the first period, putting 12 shots on goal to just five by the Bulldogs. That advantage was bolstered by a pair of Princeton power plays, with the Tigers finally connecting on the second when Brendan Gorman roofed a David Jacobs pass high blocker 12:19 into the opening period.
Â
The second period had a little bit of everything, and most of it was good for the Tigers – despite not starting off that way.
Â
Luc Pelletier was sent off for a five-minute major for a check to the head just over a minute into the game, and a subsequent Tyler Rubin minor for tripping had Princeton staring down a 5-on-3 Yale power play for two full minutes. The Tigers stood tall, with Ethan Pearson making six saves during the penalty kill and keeping Yale at bay.
Â
The Tigers again were called on to kill a penalty when Jake Manfre was called for a cross-check midway through the period, and Princeton was again up to the task to stymie the Bulldogs on the man advantage.
Â
Moments after the PK did its job, the Tigers were rewarded when Noah de la Durantaye one-timed a low shot from the point that clanged off a Yale defender and in for a 2-0 Princeton lead with 6:33 remaining in the middle period.
Â
That goal was the first of three for the Tigers over the final moments of the second period.
Â
Jake Manfre redirected home a Nick Marciano wrister with 1:27 left in the period, tipping in his first collegiate goal.
Â
The Tigers complete their first road trip of the season with a 7 p.m. tilt at Brown on November 16.

The Tigers were 1-for-3 on the power play, connecting for a Brendan Gorman PPG in the first period. On the flip side, Princeton killed off a five Yale power plays – including an arduous effort to wash away a 5:00 Yale power play which included a full two minutes of 5-on-3 shorthanded work for the Tigers.SNIPE from Gorman to give the Tigers the first lead of the night! pic.twitter.com/ktNNXkAWAb

Princeton then earned a five-minute power play of its own after Dylan Herzog was issued a major penalty for a facemask during a scrum in front of the Yale net. The Tigers were unable to score on that power play, each team letting a prime chance go by the wayside.Thank you Pearson!!

It was saves like these that kept the Bulldogs scoreless for the duration of the Tigers' double penalty kill. pic.twitter.com/P3DNCEzNZw
