Inchauspe and Nidunjianzan Advance To Second Round In NCAA Singles Championships
November 19, 2024 | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON, N.J.- The Tigers started the NCAA Individual Championships off strong on Tuesday morning. Paul Inchauspe and Fnu Nidunjianzan took the court for their first singles matchups of the tournament in the Round of 64.
Inchauspe faced off against Benito Sanchez Martinez of Mississippi State and took a 6-1, 6-3 win to move on to the next round.
"I was making him play every single, pretty much every single point, so that's always a bonus." " Inchauspe said. "I felt like I was able to stay aggressive, throughout the match, which is usually what allows me to play well and to win a lot of points."
Nidunjianzan took on Baylor's Oskar Brostrom Poulsen. The Princeton Tiger won the first set in a decisive 6-2 victory before Brostrom Poulsen pulled out a 6-4 win in the second. It all came down to the third set. Nidunjianzan did not let the loss in the second set deter him as he won the match with a score of 6-3 in the final set.
"The third set I was down 2-0, losing my serve at love-40," Nidunjianzan said. "He hit a tweener winner there in the middle, so I thought it was over there to be, quite frank. But I stayed with it and then got back and won that game."
This will be the first time since 1980 that Princeton will have two players in singles in the second round of the NCAA Individual Championships.
"It just shows that the Ivy League is up there, we're up there," Nidunjianzan said. "Great day for the Tigers. Two wins. I was hoping for that."
"These guys have done an incredible job for the last few years," head coach Billy Pate said. "They're both super professional. They're highly ambitious. They want to be professional tennis players, but they're putting the work in day in and day out. So it's really gratifying to see that come to fruition."
With the wins, the two Tigers advanced to the singles Round of 32 which is set for Nov. 20.
"These guys are really experiencing tremendous growth and we hope that continues," Pate said. "They can just take it day by day and the sky's the limit if they want it to be."
