Men's Hockey Falls At No. 7 Cornell
November 23, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
No. 7 Cornell scored three times in the first period and added two in the third to stymie Princeton, 5-0, at Lynah Rink.
Special teams played a crucial role, with Cornell killing all four Princeton power plays and scoring twice on man advantages of its own.
Ian Shane made 23 saves for the Big Red to record the shutout.
Princeton had jump to open the game, nearly capitalizing on a Luc Pelletier shot from the slot just as a Tiger power play expired six minutes into the game and again coming within inches of the opening goal when Miles Gunty and Kevin Anderson had back-to-back shots turned aside by Ian Shane on the ensuing shift.
Cornell then applied some counterpressure before the midway mark of the first period, with sustained time in the Princeton zone leading to a Dalton Bancroft goal 9:12 in via a low shot through traffic from the slot.
The Big Red tacked on a second goal 2:05 later when Jake Kraft found an opening just outside the crease and one-timed in a Tim Rego pass.
The lead became 3-0 when Cornell got a bit of puck luck when a Michael Suda shot from the point was stopped by Ethan Pearson but caromed off Ondrej Psenicka and into the net with 2:21 remaining in the first period.
The second period was a showdown of special teams as both squads were called for a combined eight penalties and each team was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. The Tigers had a slight edge in shots on goal in the middle frame, 9-7.
Cornell finally broke the deadlock in terms of special teams conversions when Ryan Walsh tipped in a Ben Robertson pass with 12:49 to play in the third period. They tacked on a second power-play goal with 4:12 to play Robertson scored quickly off a fceoff.
Princeton returns to Baker Rink November 29-30, hosting Ohio State for the Tigers' first non-conference games of the 2024-25 season.
