PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's soccer team dropped its final regular season game to no. 12 Penn at home in Roberts Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Princeton falls to 10-6 and 5-2 in the Ivy League, while Penn improves to 13-2-1 and 7-0 in the Ivy League.
"Today was a hard-fought game against a really good team; congratulations to Penn. We are proud of the effort our team put in today. Our focus and energy now shifts to preparing for the Ivy League Tournament next week." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn began the press early, earning the first corner of the game in the ninth minute.
As the Tigers settled in, however, the game quickly entered a constant end to end battle as each side tried to generate chances.
In the 15th minute, Tiger keeper Andrew Samuels came off his line to stop a dangerous chance by the Quakers. Sending the ball the other way, Sam Vigilante ripped a shot in the 17th minute, going just high of the net.
Both sides continued to battle it out for the remainder of the first half, going into the break scoreless.
Coming out of halftime, the Tigers looked dangerous as a beautiful curling ball from Will Francis went just inches to the left of the goal in the 56th minute.
Just moments later, in the 60th minute, traffic in the box resulted in several Tiger shots that were blocked by the Penn defenders and saved by the Quaker keeper Philip Falcon III.
Despite continued pressure from the Tigers, the score remained at 0-0 until the 85th minute, when Penn's Stas Korzeniowski scored to put the Quakers up 1-0.
Ultimately, the Tigers could not find an equalizer in the five remaining minutes, the Penn would stand to take the 1-0 victory and the Ivy League title outright.
