
Women's Track & Field Wraps Up Successful Weekend, Liebich Smashes School Mile Record

This past weekend, the Princeton women's track and field team concluded their competitions, participating in both the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston and the Giegengack Invitational at Yale. Throughout the weekend, there were notable achievements, including the breaking of a school record, impressive performances that secured top-ten record marks, numerous personal bests, and several podium finishes within the top three.
"Our team put together another spectacular weekend of performances," said head coach Michelle Eisenreich. "Maggie's school record in the mile set the tone not only for the weekend but also for what our team is ready to do at Heps. Across all events, our women are competing at an elite level that will be hard to beat."
BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational
At the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational, Maggie Liebich achieved a new milestone in the 1-mile race by setting a school record with a time of 4:36.53, surpassing the previous record of 4:39.32
"Smashing the school record in the mile is a culmination of the preparation, perseverance, dedication and fierce competitive spirit that Maggie has displayed throughout her Princeton career," said distance and middle distance coach Brad Hunt. "Maggie has set tremendous goals for herself and the team this winter and spring. Her mindset and expectations continue to bring out the best in herself, her teammates and the coaching staff. This outstanding starting point, in her debut mile of the season, is just a hint of what is to come for Maggie and the team in 2024."
The quartet of Adelaide Asante, India Ingemi, Brianna Mponzi, and Hannah Riggins on the women's 4x400 team secured the 3rd position on the all-time list with a time of 3:44.47.
Mena Scatchard advanced from 9th to 6th place in the Princeton indoor top-ten list in the women's 1000m, clocking in at 2:47.69. Scatchard and Hannah Riggins both achieved top-ten placements in the 800m. Riggins clocked in at 2:07.79, securing 7th place on the Princeton all-time list, while Scatchard finished closely behind with a time of 2:08.40, earning 8th place.
Maisha Atkinson's performance saw her move up from 9th to a shared 8th position on the top-ten list in the 400m, recording a time of 55.74. Tsion Yared was a top finisher in the 3000m run with a PR of 9:25.22.
Giegengack Invitational
At the Giegengack Invitational, the Tigers had several standout performances to wrap up a busy weekend of competition.
Rachael Wilson blazed through the 500m event, crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 1:16.28, clinching the victory for Princeton.
Shantell Kwofie left her mark by setting a personal record in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.71, further exemplifying the Tigers' depth in hurdling talent. Lily Parris also made the podium on her 60m hurdles run, displaying her prowess by claiming the third spot.
In the field events, Maddy Wood soared to a second-place finish in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.76m (5'9.25"), while Julia Jongejeugd showcased her versatility with a college-best high jump of 1.62m (5'3.75"). Jongejeugd also secured the top spot in the 60m hurdles, clocking in at 8.54, which ranks fourth all-time for Princeton.
Tessa's performance in the vault, clearing a height of 4.25m (13'11.25"), was a season best. Along with this, Georgina Scoot and Alexandra Kelly dominated the long jump, securing a 1-2 finish with jumps of 6.00m (19-8.25) and 5.83m (19-1.50), respectively, demonstrating Princeton's strength in the jumping events.
Makenna Marshall and Angela McAuslan-Kelly delivered strong performances in their respective throws, with Marshall claiming second place in the shot put and McAuslan-Kelly securing second in the weight throw with a mark of 18.71m. Also in the weight throw, Katie Peterson impressed with a personal record of 17.94m, earning her the eighth spot all-time, while Maddie Wolford also achieved a personal best with a throw of 15.69m.
To cap off the meet, Shantell Kwofie, freshman multi-eventer, showcased her endurance with a second-place finish in the 400m event, her third event of the day, crossing the line in a time of 57.53.
Overall, the week was a testament to the Tigers' talent and depth across various events, setting the stage for a promising Ivy Indoor Heps two weekends from now.
