Men's Hockey Rallies; Falls In Shootout To St. Lawrence
March 01, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton rallied from two goals down in the third period to force overtime, but was one goal short in the shootout to St. Lawrence. The game officially goes down as a 4-4 tie, with the Saints getting an extra point in the ECAC standings via a 1-0 win after five rounds of the shootout.
Princeton can finish as high as eighth depending on results on Saturday night and as low as the No. 10 spot.
The Tigers outshot St. Lawrence, 50-32, in the game – including a 20-7 edge in the third period and a 7-1 advantage in overtime. Ben Kraws made 46 saves for St. Lawrence.
The line of David Jacobs-Kai Daniells-Brendan Gorman had a total of nine points in the game as each had three-point contests. Daniells set a new career high with his 1g, 2a night while Jacobs (2g, 1a) and Gorman (3a) tied their career highs.
The first period was a busy one as the two teams combined to score five goals, three from the Saints and two from the Tigers.
Nicholas Trela opened the scoring 3:24 in for St. Lawrence breaking in on a 2-on-1 and sneaking a shot five-hole.
The Tigers answered with two goals in a span of 0:38 to take a 2-1 lead.
David Jacobs scored first, stuffing home the rebound of a Brendan Gorman shot 7:11 into the first period.
Greg Lapointe was first, connecting right off a faceoff with a slapshot through traffic.
Felikss Gavars followed with 2:11 to play in the period, taking advantage of a scramble situation in front of the Princeton net after some contact with Arthur Smith and funneling a rebound in.
Gavars doubled St. Lawrence's lead early in the second period when he scored on a penalty shot 0:59 into the middle frame. His original breakaway was denied when Ian Devlin slashed him close to goal, but Gavars then put together two quick fakes before snapping a low shot by Ethan Pearson for a 4-2 Saints lead.
Jacobs clawed the Tigers back within one with his second goal of the game at the 7:59 mark of the third period, slipping open in front to one-time a Brendan Gorman pass to make it a 4-3 game.
St. Lawrence had a chance to steal the win in regulation, but Greg Lapointe hit the post from in tight with 0:49 remaining.
In overtime, the Tigers earned a power play midway through when Gavars was called for tripping but were unable to connect on the 4-on-3 man advantage as Ben Kraws made four stops on the power play.
In the shootout, neither side was able to score until Jan Lasak connected in the fifth round. Kai Daniells had a chance to match for Princeton, but his offering was denied by Kraws.
The Tigers conclude the regular season on March 2 against Clarkson at Hobey Baker Rink. Faceoff with the Golden Knights is set for 7 p.m.
With the result, Princeton sits in a tie for ninth place in the ECAC with Yale, both teams holding 25 points and one point behind Harvard for the No. 8 spot and home ice in the Opening Round of the ECAC Playoffs.Daniells Delivers!
