Tigers Close Weekend With Win Over North Dakota
March 10, 2024 | Softball
Cassidy Shaw and Molly Chambers combined to hold North Dakota to a run on four hits and four walks while striking out seven as the Princeton softball team closed its weekend with a 2-1 win over the Fighting Hawks in Fullerton, Calif.
Princeton will take back-to-back wins into Tuesday's 9 p.m. ET visit to California Baptist (ESPN+ | Live Stats) before a Wednesday 4 p.m. ET game at UC San Diego (ESPN+ | Live Stats) ends the spring trip to Southern California.
After three scoreless innings both ways, Princeton opened the scoring in the fourth after a sacrifice fly from Abby Hornberger brought home Courtney Harrison, who ran for Karis Ford after a leadoff walk. Two walks and an unsuccessful fielder's choice loaded the bases ahead of the sacrifice fly.
North Dakota got the run back in the fifth after a sacrifice fly followed a single and a double to start the inning, but Princeton took the lead again in the bottom half of the inning. Cate Bade and Lauren Sablone each had a hit to start the inning, and after a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, a double steal saw Sonia Zhang get to second and Bade come home on a throwing error with what became the winning run.
Shaw finished with a run on three hits and four walks allowed in five innings of work, striking out four, and Chambers allowed just a hit in her two innings, striking out three.
