Fillier Earns Third IIHF Women's World Championship With Canada
April 14, 2024 | Women's Ice Hockey
For the third time in four years, Sarah Fillier and Team Canada are IIHF Hockey Women's World Champions.
The gold medal Fillier won following Sunday night's 6-5 Canadian win over Team USA is the fourth straight medal, coming just two days short of a year after the Americans defeated Canada 6-3 in the 2023 IIHF Women's World Championship final held in Brampton, Ont., Canada.
The 2023 outcome ended Canada's two-year run as IIHF world champs, with Fillier helping Canada to gold in 2021 in Calgary and 2022 in Denmark. This year, Canada returned the favor, defeating the U.S. on American soil in Utica, N.Y.
Fillier had two goals and an assist during the seven games of the tournament, scoring a goal in the pool-play round in a 3-0 win over Switzerland and in a 4-0 win over Czechia in the semis.
Canada's 2021 title was its first since 2012, and the run of three titles in four tournaments is Canada's best since winning three of four from 2001-07. Team USA won eight of nine tournaments held in between Canada's wins in 2007 and 2021, other than 2012.
The medal adds to Fillier's successful run with the top Canadian team, winning Olympic gold in 2022 along with the IIHF titles in 2021, 2022 and now 2024, and the IIHF silver medal in 2023.
The next IIHF Women's World Championship tournament will be held in April 2025 in Czechia.Â
