Women's Lacrosse Falls To Penn In Ivy League Semifinals
May 03, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
It was a tale of two halves for Princeton in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals as an 8-7 Tigers lead was flipped on its head as Penn stormed back for an 18-14 win on the first day of the Ivy Tournament at Yale.
The game was tied 10 times and saw four lead changes, but it was a 9-2 Penn run in the third and fourth quarters that took a 10-9 Princeton lead and switched momentum squarely toward the Quakers.
Haven Dora scored a jump-shot goal 4:12 into the fourth quarter which brought the Tigers back to within two, but back-to-back cards on Princeton halted that momentum and allowed the Quakers to score three extra-player goals in a span of 1:11 to extend their lead to six.
Jami MacDonald had a six-point game, scoring four times and adding two assists. Kari Buonanno and Haven Dora each had four-point afternoons, scoring three times and dishing out an assist.
Buonanno was impactful all over the field, causing three turnovers and winning a draw control in addition to her four points.
Amelia Hughes made 11 saves in goal, adding three ground balls.
Kari Buonanno netted the first goal of the game, needing just 0:48 to take a Haven Dora pass and give Princeton a 1-0 lead. The Quakers countered with two in a span of 0:30 to lead, 2-1, midway through the opening period but that was the last time Penn led in the opening half.
Jami MacDonald tied the game at 2-2 with 4:36 remaining in the first quarter, and Grace Tauckus then capitalized after the Tigers caused a turnover and gave Princeton a 3-2 lead with 2:19 to play in the opening period.
The Quakers answered with two of their own, but Blake scored one more for the Tigers before the end of the half for an 8-7 lead at the break.
The Quakers opened the third quarter with two goals in a span 2:44 to take a 9-8 lead, but Princeton had one more counterpunch in the form of goals from Dora and Blake for a10-9 Princeton lead with 9:23 remaining in the third period.
Dora snuck out from behind the cage in the opening five minutes of the fourth to close back within two, but that was as close as Princeton would get.

Penn would equalize before the end of the first, but Buonanno opened the second quarter just as she did the first – with an early goal – to give Princeton a 4-3 lead. Eventually, MacDonald and Samantha DeVito scored back-to-back goals in a span of 2:19 to give the Tigers a 7-5 lead which was the first two-goal lead for any team in the game.2:19 (1Q) We'll Take That!

What a play off the draw as McKenzie Blake wins the DC and then feeds Haven Dora wide open to tie the game at 9-9! pic.twitter.com/cxZoO6p8Je

A four-goal run from Penn bolstered by three extra-player goals with DeVito (red card) and Roberts (yellow card) in the penalty box provided enough insurance for the Quakers to hold off late goals from Jami MacDonald who scored twice in the final 2:00 of play.Jump Shot!
