May 30, 2024 | Women's Rowing - Open
PRINCETON – The No. 4 Princeton Women's Rowing Team makes the trip to East Fork/Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio for the NCAA Rowing Championships this weekend.
Princeton's varsity eight earned a No. 3 seed, trailing only Texas (No. 1) and No. 2 Stanford. The Tigers' 2V was slotted in at No. 6 behind Texas (No. 1), No. 2 Tennessee (No. 2), Stanford (No. 3), Brown (No. 4) and Yale (No. 5). The Varsity Four is No. 3 behind Stanford (No. 1) and Texas (No. 2).
The First Varsity went unbeaten this season and won the Ivy League title for the Tigers on Sunday. The Tigers' 2V won bronze at the Ivy League Championships but did defeat Brown during the regular season. The Varsity Four also nabbed Ivy gold, earning a 7:18.72, 3.8 seconds in front.
"We are really excited to race teams we haven't seen so far this season," said Margot LeRoux. "We've known all year that we would have some tough competition at NCAAs, but not necessarily how we compared. Now is the time all teams get to showcase their speed, and it's very exciting. We obviously had lots to celebrate the other week after Ivies, but didn't let that get in the way of working to gain more speed before NCAAs."
Head coach Lori Dauphiny's 1V has not lost all year in 2024, collecting wins over Brown, Harvard, Cornell, Rutgers, USC, Yale, Columbia, Northeastern, Notre Dame and Penn all by at least three seconds.
Last year, Princeton finished third in the 2023 NCAA team standings, trailing Stanford (129) and Washington (120). It was the second straight season the Tigers were third, marking the first time in program history that the team finished top three in consecutive seasons. Dauphiny's squad was the top Ivy school with Yale going fifth (110), Penn sixth (62) and Brown seventh (91).
The First Varsity maintained third place through its final, crossing the line at 6:22.17 behind Stanford (6:17.15) and Washington (6:19.55). It is the third time ever that the boat has medaled at NCAAs in consecutive years (2009-10, 2005-06).
Princeton's varsity four boat finished sixth in its Grand Final (7:22.05), trailing Texas (7:03.17), Yale (7:06.9), Brown (7:11.87), Stanford (7:12.71) and Virginia (7:16.56). This is the fourth Grand Final for the four in the last eight NCAA races.
The Tigers' second varsity collected fifth place in its Grand Final behind Stanford (6:24.85), Washington (6:26.17), California (6:27.53) and Yale (6:27.77). Fifth place matches its posting from last year which is the best mark for Princeton since a silver in 2014.
The Tigers had three alumnae named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team in Claire Collins '19, Emily Kallfelz '19 and Kesley Reelick '14. They will race in either the four or eight boats.
