July 09, 2024 | Women's Soccer
With the National Women's Soccer League teams taking a mid-summer break from league play, it's time to check in on Princeton's two active alumnae competing in the league, with defender Madison Curry '24 with Angel City FC and forward Tyler Lussi '17 with NC Courage.
Curry has played in 14 of the team's 15 games since making her NWSL debut on March 22 against Orlando, scoring in what was her first NWSL start in the team's next game against the Kansas City Current on March 30. All 13 of Curry's appearances beginning with the March 30 game against Kansas City have been starts.
Lussi has played in all 16 of NC Courage's games this spring and summer, making 14 starts. Lussi scored in three straight games in April, against Portland, Angel City and Seattle, adding a goal against Seattle on June 23. Lussi also had an assist in the Portland game on April 13 in which she scored a goal.
Both Tiger alumnae's teams will play in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup beginning on July 20 with the first of three group-stage games, with Angel City hosting Club América in Fullerton, Calif., and NC Courage hosting Orlando. Angel City and NC Courage went head to head on April 21 in Los Angeles with Angel City winning 2-1. The teams will meet again on Oct. 12 in Cary, N.C.
Along with Curry and Lussi on the field, the NWSL has Angie Long '97 and Chris Long '97 as owners in Kansas City. With all teams 16 games into the season, Kansas City is in second place with 35 points at 10-1-5, three points back of leader Orlando. NC Courage stands sixth, at 8-7-1 with 25 points, and Angel City stands 11th, at 4-9-3, just three points back of eighth-place Bay FC, which is presently in the final playoff spot. The regular season will wrap up on the first weekend of November.
