Men's Golf Sets 54-Hole Program Record To Claim USF/Howard Intercollegiate
September 10, 2024 | Men's Golf
The 2024-25 campaign for Princeton's men's golf team opened in fine fashion as the Tigers put together a record-setting performance en route to the team title at the USF/Howard Intercollegiate held at The Manor Club in Maryland.
Riccardo Fantinelli picked up right where he left off as the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year earned individual medalist honors. The junior finished the three rounds at -10 (66-67-67; 200) to set a program-best in terms of low 54-hole total and win by six shots. His 54 holes played at -10 is the second-best score relative to par since 1993-94 by a Princeton Tiger as well, trailing only William Huang's -11 last year at the Hamptons Intercollegiate.
Fantinelli now has four career wins, tied for third-most by a Princeton player since 1993-94. He has now earned at least a share of medalist honors in 25% of his career starts.
The Tigers closed with a team score of 274 (-6) to pull away in the team race and win by 15 strokes over second-place Loyola (MD). Princeton's team total of 828 over the three rounds of play also established a new program-record for low 54-hole team score, blowing past the previous low team score for 54 hole which was 840 set at The McLaughlin during the 2010-11 season.
Freshman Reed Greyserman recorded a Top-10 finish to open his collegiate career, shooting even par (210) over his three rounds to finish as just one of eight players at par or better in the field. He closed with rounds of 69-68 to offset an opening 73.
Tommy Frist was the next-highest finishing Tiger who was scoring for the team race, shooting +2 (68-73-71; 212) over the 54 holes. Sophomore Charlie Palmer, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year, was T17 at +5 as he closed strong with rounds of 71 and 68 after an opening 76. Rookie Eric Yun was even after 36 holes and finished at +6 overall (70-70-76; 216) to tie for 20th.
A host of Tigers also competed as individuals, led by William Huang who was T9 overall at +1 (69-72-70; 211).
