78th-Minute Goal Lifts No. 8 Penn State Past Princeton, 1-0
September 05, 2024 | Women's Soccer
A 78th-minute goal lifted No. 8-ranked Penn State over the Princeton women's soccer team 1-0 on Thursday night at Roberts Stadium in a game that saw senior goalkeeper Tyler McCamey tie her career high with nine saves.
Though Princeton became the first Penn State opponent to hold leading scorer Kaitlyn MacBean scoreless in the Nittany Lions' sixth game of the new season after scoring eight goals over the first five, it was another of the three Penn Staters on the Big Ten's preseason Players to Watch list who scored. The play began when Mieke Schiemann, another of the three players on that Big Ten preseason list, headed down a ball that the Tigers sent back toward the Penn State end. Riley Gleason picked up the loose ball about 10 yards behind the half line and found Olivia Borgen just ahead of midfield. Borgen took the ball ahead up the middle and let go a strike just before reaching the 18 that threaded between a pair of Princeton defenders, past a diving McCamey and inside the left post. It was Schiemann, twice, and Borgen who scored the goals in Penn State's 3-0 win over the Tigers last season in State College.
McCamey last had nine saves in a game against Harvard in 2022.
Both teams were without players competing at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia, with Princeton without sophomore defender Zoe Markesini, who has started both group-stage games so far for Canada, and Pietra Tordin, a 12-goal scorer last year who started and played the first 78 minutes for Team USA in Wednesday night's win over Morocco. Tordin is U.S. teammates with Mackenzie Gress, who started the season opener in goal for Penn State and has been a reserve keeper so far for the Americans in Colombia.
Princeton became just the second team this year to hold Penn State to a single goal, with Virginia, then ranked No. 21 in the nation, doing so in a 2-1 win over the Nittany Lions on Aug. 22. The last time a team held Penn State scoreless as deep into a game as Princeton did was in the 2023 Big Ten Tournament semifinal, when Iowa shut out the Nittany Lions for 94-plus minutes in a golden-goal win. Penn State went on to make the NCAA semifinals before losing to Clemson. UCF was the last non-Big Ten team to hold Penn State scoreless for as long as Princeton did, allowing an 88th-minute goal in a 1-0 Penn State win on Aug. 31 of last season.Â
Princeton will return to play Sunday at William & Mary when the two winningest coaches in Princeton history meet, with Sean Driscoll, at 95 wins, leading Princeton against Tribe coach and alumna Julie Shackford, who had 203 wins through the 2014 season before Driscoll took over.Â
