Welcome To The Jungfer!!! - Princeton Tops No. 7 Louisville On Aimee Jungfer's Goal
September 06, 2024 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, KY. -  Everywhere you looked on the steamy turf of Trager Field Friday afternoon, you saw a freshman on the Princeton field hockey team. There were three — Anna Faulstich, Clem Houlden, Lilly Wojcik — who started. Within five minutes, three others — Pru Lindsey, Izzy Morgan, Molly Nye — played. At times five of them were on the field at the same time.
Â
The highly regarded Class of 2028 was thrown to the fire in Game 1, on the home field of No. 7 Louisville in the ACC/Ivy Crossover Challenge. The newcomers swarmed, controlled the ball, limited Cardinal chances and impacted the game all over the field.
Â
Just not on the scoreboard. On a day notable for the way the new players contributed early and often, the lone goal came from a senior. It was Aimee Jungfer's drive in the final minute of the third quarter that gave Princeton a big 1-0 win to start the season.
Â
Princeton will now play two-time defending NCAA champion North Carolina Sunday at 10:30 on the second day of the challenge. The Tar Heels defeated Penn 5-0 in the first game Friday afternoon.
Â
The play that ended up with the goal started when Lydia Bills played the ball forward to Talia Schenck, who dribbled down the left side and took the ball into the circle. It bounced around before a Louisville clearing attempt hit off of Bills' stick and found Junger, who took one step into the circle and ripped it into the back of the cage.
Defensively, Princeton was led by Ottilie Sykes, last year's Ivy Co-Rookie of the Year, and senior Gracie McGowan, both of whom played all 60 minutes on a day when the temperature was 90 at gametime.
Â
Princeton's win ended a 13-game ACC winning streak in the tournament. The Tigers outshot Louisville 11-8.

Jungfer's goal in the second game of the doubleheader was the second of her career, the other one having come against Yale in garbage time her freshman year. This time, the senior from Australia cashed in at a more opportune moment, after the teams had played a possession game that hadn't featured too many good scoring chances. Here's how it happened, off the stick of Aimee Jungfer. pic.twitter.com/nrHA3DAKnh
