January 01, 2025 | Football
Princeton Athletics and the Princeton football program mourn the loss of Martin "Tiger" Bech '21, who passed away in the Bourbon Street attack in New Orleans on January 1st.Â
Bech was with teammate Ryan Quigley '20Â who was also injured. Quigley was recently released from the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.Â
"It has been difficult to understand what has happened in New Orleans last week, but we are so grateful that Ryan Quigley has been released from the hospital, said Charles W. Caldwell Jr. '25 Head Coach of Football Bob Surace. "Ryan and Tiger Bech were teammates, co-workers and best friends. Princeton Football is incredibly grateful for the incredible love and support shown to the Bech and Quigley families during this difficult time. We will continue to grieve together over the tragic loss of Tiger and give Ryan the support he needs as he continues his recovery."
"There was no more appropriate nickname of a Princeton player I coached," said Surace about Bech. "He was a 'Tiger' in every way - a ferocious competitor with endless energy, a beloved teammate and a caring friend. Our last conversation was about how proud I was of the growth he showed during his time at Princeton and the success he was having after graduation. My love goes to the entire Bech family."
Bech was a member of the 2016 and 2018 Ivy League Championship teams. He earned two All-Ivy honors as a return specialist for the Tigers including second-team accolades during Princeton's first perfect season since 1964 in 2018. He also recorded 53 catches for 825 yards and three touchdowns as wide receiver during his career with Princeton. Also a member of the 2016 and 2018 Ivy title squads, Quigley appeared in 33 games for Princeton and recorded 1,192 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns, along with 40 receptions for 266 yards and a touchdown.Â
