Whitchurch and Samuels Named to Hermann Trophy Midseason Watch List

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Andrew Samuels and Giuliano Fravolini Whitchurch were named to the 2025 Hermann Trophy Midseason Watch List, as announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Friday.
The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club and is the nation's highest individual honor in college soccer, recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by voting of Division I head coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
Whitchurch and Samuels are two of just 31 players selected nationally to the midseason list. Whitchurch is one of just four defenders to be selected, while Samuels is one of just four goalkeepers. Whitchurch was also named to the preseason watch list in August.
Samuels and Whitchurch have led the Tigers to an outstanding start to the season, as the Tigers currently rank first in the RPI and ninth in this week's poll. The Tigers boast a record of 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
With Samuels between the posts and Whitchurch leading the squad from the back line, the pair have helped Princeton allow just three goals in their nine games this season. Princeton ranks second in the nation in goals allowed average (0.33), and fourth in save percentage (0.906). The Tigers are also fifth in shutout percentage, with six on the season.
With three consecutive shutouts and just one goal allowed in the last seven matches, Samuels has been on fire, earning three back-to-back Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week awards with the most recent on Monday.
Samuels, a junior from Burlingame, Calif., ranks third in the country in GAA (0.33) and save percentage (0.903). Samuels is also eighth in shutouts.
Whitchurch, a senior captain from San Diego, Calif., has been solid for the Tigers, playing every minute of the Tigers' season while playing a pivotal role in the team's success. During preseason, he was named to the Hermann Watch List and named a United Soccer Coaches Defender to Watch.
Whitchurch was a 2024 First Team All-Ivy honoree, after serving as a cornerstone of the Tiger defense last year as he started all 19 matches and recorded a squad-high 1717 minutes.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is named in honor of the late Robert Hermann, the legendary St. Louis, Mo., businessman and soccer executive who founded the National Professional Soccer League, the first pro soccer league in the United States which became the North American Soccer League. He was inducted in the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012.
The 2025 midseason watch list was compiled by members of the Hermann Trophy Midseason Watch List Committee. A total of 15 players will be named 2025 Hermann Trophy semifinalists on December 9 at the conclusion of NCAA Division I All-American voting. From that list, head coaches will cast votes, and three players will be named finalists. The 2025 recipient will be announced January 9, 2026, in a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis, Mo.
