Mikey Squires Added as Captain for the 2024-25 Princeton Wrestling Season
February 05, 2025 | Wrestling
PRINCETON, N.J. – Mikey Squires has been named a captain of the Princeton wrestling team, the team announced Wednesday.
Squires, a senior out of Norwich, N.Y., has been a critical part of the program's character and leadership, exhibiting incredible work ethic on and off the mat.
"Mikey embodies everything you want in a student-athlete and a leader," said Head Coach Joe Dubuque. "He's selfless, hardworking and a model citizen off the mat."
"After losing a wrestle-off to his teammate, Mikey was right back in the room a few hours later helping that same teammate get ready for that weekend's match," Dubuque added. "When afforded the opportunity, he wrestled up a weight against West Virginia and won the match."
"His amazing story from walk-on to nationally ranked wrestler will be told for years to come and gives me a lot of pleasure to add a "Captain's" chapter to that story."
This season, Squires won his weight class (184) at the Princeton Open on November 3rd, going 4-0 on the day. Overall, he holds an 11-5 record this season, and has been ranked as high as 27 in the national rankings (Flowrestling).
Wrestling at 197 instead of his usual 184, Squires had a highlight performance in Princeton's dual meet against #22 West Virginia. Against the Mountaineers' Ian Bush, Squires battled out a 7-4 decision to help the Tigers stay in the dual. Princeton would drop the match, but Squires' performance stood out as a triumph from the day.
As a junior, Squires posted an 11-14 record at 174, competed in 11 dual matches with a 4-7 record and placed 5th at the Princeton Open, after posting a 2-5 record overall his sophomore year.
Now a captain, Squires joins Luke Stout, Blaine Bergey and Ty Whalen on team leadership, as the Tigers set their eyes on a competitive postseason coming in just a few weeks.
Princeton's next battle will be on Saturday, February 8th in Ithaca as the Tigers, who are tied for first in the Ivy standings with a 3-0 league record, take on #9 Cornell. The first bout is scheduled for 1 p.m.
