Softball Team Splits Pair at San José State to Open Spring Trip
March 09, 2025 | Softball
Scoring 13 runs across 15 innings on Sunday, the Princeton softball team opened its spring trip with a doubleheader split at San José State, seeing the Spartans rally for a 7-6, eight-inning win in the opener before a 7-2 Tiger win in the nightcap.
Princeton will head to Santa Clara on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. ET doubleheader. The games will be streamed on ESPN+ (Game 1 | Game 2) with live scoring available (Game 1 | Game 2).
Game 1: San José State 7, Princeton 6 (8 inn.)
Karis Ford and Allison Ha each had a three-hit game in the opener while Lauren Sablone and Abby Hornberger each had two RBI, but four runs across the final two innings lifted the Spartans to a come-from-behind 7-6 win in eight innings.
Princeton got on the board with Hornberger's two-run triple that picked up a walk to Sonia Zhang and a Ford base hit. The lead became 3-0 in the fourth when Zhang tripled and Sablone followed with a base hit, and in the fifth, a Graciela Dominguez single and an Ally Ha double put runners on for a Jessica Phelps sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
SJSU responded with three in the bottom of the fifth on two errors and a Reina Zermeno three-run homer, but the Tigers were able to hang on to the 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans tied it when a Jules Ronquillo double brought home a leadoff walk to make it 4-4.
The eighth inning, with a tiebreaker runner for each team on second, saw five of the game's 13 runs scored. Princeton got two in the top half on back-to-back hits to lead off the inning from Zhang and Sablone, but two walks and three hits in the bottom half gave SJSU the 7-6 win.
Game 2: Princeton 7, San José State 2
Cassidy Shaw threw 5 1/3 innings to get the win in the nightcap, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, striking out four, and Dominguez had a 4-for-4 game as Princeton finished the day with 25 hits as a team on the way to the split with a 7-2 game-two win.
Princeton got out to a 2-0 lead when a walk to Hornberger and singles by Ha and Dominguez loaded the bases for Allie Goodwin's sacrifice fly and an RBI single for Ha. Four more runs came in the fourth, with Dominguez and Goodwin singling to start the inning before an error off the bat of Braeden Hale plated a run. RBI singles from Sablone and Julia Dumais each added another run, and a wild pitch on a Hornberger strikeout added another to make it 6-0.
Dominguez's third hit of the day, a double, led off the fifth, and a Phelps base hit drove in Princeton's seventh run of the day. SJSU got on the board with two runs in the sixth on a triple, walk, another base hit and an error, but that's all the Spartans got in game two.
Keala Hollenkamp closed out the win with an inning and two thirds of shutout work, allowing three hits and a walk, striking out one.
