Softball Team Ends Ivy Tournament Run, Caps Ivy Title Season
May 10, 2025 | Softball
For the fourth consecutive year, the Princeton softball team was on its home field and was one of the final two teams in pursuit of the Ivy League's bid to the NCAA tournament.Â
The bid went Princeton's way twice in that span, in 2022 and 2024, but this time, Brown ended Princeton's run two wins short of extending the Tigers' season into the NCAA bracket, taking Saturday afternoon's tournament final, 4-1.
Princeton opened its tournament on Thursday with a 4-0 loss to Brown but bounced back on Friday night with a 5-1 win over Harvard to knock out the Crimson and continued that momentum with a 10-1, five-inning win over Columbia on Saturday to eliminate the Lions.Â
That set up a rematch with Brown, which earned its place in the Ivy final with a 2-1 win over Columbia on Friday, with the Bears needing only one win to capture their first Ivy League Tournament title and their first NCAA bid since 1997.
Brown got it going with its leadoff batter in the bottom of the first inning reaching on an error and coming home two batters later on a base hit. Princeton tied it in the third inning when Braeden Hale's double drove home Julia Dumais, but against tournament Most Outstanding Player Alexis Guevara, that was the last run Princeton got, seeing just a Graciela Dominguez fifth-inning single and a Sonia Zhang sixth-inning double from there.
Brown regained the lead with a walk and two hits in the fourth to make it 2-1 and opened the lead with two runs on a double, a single, an unsuccessful fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 4-1.
Earlier Saturday, Princeton run-ruled Columbia, getting a fast start with a two-run Karis Ford homer in the top of the first and maintaining the lead from there.Â
Columbia made it 2-1 in the second on a Caylene Nguyen solo homer, but Princeton got that back when Zhang drove home a Ford double with a base hit in the third and added to it with three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Dumais had a two-run double in the fourth and Hale had an RBI hit in that inning, and Dominguez had a two-run single and Hale had a two-run double in the fifth.
Cassidy Shaw got the complete-game win against the Lions, allowing the run on two hits and three walks.
Shaw, who appeared in all four games, was one of Princeton's three representatives on the Ivy League All-Tournament Team, finishing with a 1.27 ERA across 11 innings. Dumais, who hit .455 for the weekend (5-11), and Zhang, who hit .417 (5-12) joined Shaw in earning all-tournament honors.
