Marty Crotty ’98 Receives IRCA Leadership Award
June 20, 2025 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
IRCA Release
PRINCETON, N.J. – Marty Crotty '98 was honored with the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA) Leadership Award Friday afternoon.
The Leadership Award is given to a coach or administrator who has shown great leadership and become a role for men's collegiate rowing.
"Marty Crotty has been a cornerstone of Princeton Rowing for over 30 years," said Assistant Coach David Burke. "As a student-athlete, he helped the Princeton Heavyweight 1V to victories at both the Eastern Sprints and the IRA, and as a coach, he guided his crews to gold medals and national championships. His most lasting impact, however, lies in the hundreds of student-athletes he has mentored throughout his career. Marty has made Shea Rowing Center a better place for the more than 150 Tiger rowers who walk through its doors each day. While he will be missed, his influence will remain a part of Princeton Rowing for years to come— and we know he will continue to be Princeton Rowing's #1 fan."
Crotty won a pair of national titles as a member of the heavyweight rowing team at Princeton and served as men's lightweight head coach for 15 seasons. During his time leading the Tigers, Princeton won IRA National Championships and Eastern Sprints titles in 2023 and 2010. At IRAs, the Tigers won eight medals, including five golds, under Crotty along with 12 medals, including four golds, at Eastern Sprints.
In addition to his success at IRAs and Sprints, Crotty helped hi teams beat their best in their signature events. In the fall of 2017, Crotty guided Princeton a victory at the Head of the Charles Regatta. That crew would go on to reach the quarterfinals in the Temple Cup at Henley.
Two lightweight alumni who rowed for Crotty represented the United States in the Olympics in Robin Prendes '10 (2012, 2016) and Tyler Nase '13 (2016).
