PRINCETON – The No. 19 Princeton Women's Basketball Team shot 64.3 percent in the fourth quarter to run by the Cornell Big Red, 72-61, at Jadwin Gym on Saturday evening.
A triple from Skye Belker with under a minute to go in the third quarter gave Princeton a 48-46 lead as the final 10 minutes got underway.
The Tigers began the fourth stanza with four consecutive makes to push their advantage to 10, 58-48, as the clock read 7:17. An Ashley Chea trey improved the lead to 12, 65-53, before Toby Nweke added two more from the charity stripe on the next trip down the floor.
Princeton was never in danger the rest of the game.
The two Ivy foes had an evenly played first frame with Princeton holding an 18-16 lead.
An 8-0 run by the Big Red put the road unit ahead, 25-22, forcing a Princeton timeout with 3:24 left in the first half. The Tigers rebounded and tied the game at 27-all at halftime.
Belker and Olivia Hutcherson paced the Tigers' offense with 20 points each, combining to go 17-of-26 shooting (65.4 percent). Hutcherson corralled seven boards and three steals while Belker contributed five dimes in the victory.
Princeton shot 17-of-28 in the second half (61 percent) and finished with a 19/5 assist to turnover ratio.
Head coach Carla Berube's team improves to 18-2 overall and 6-1 in the Ivy League while Cornell dropped to 8-12 this season and 3-4 in conference action. With Columbia's loss to Penn tonight., Princeton moves into sole possession of first place in the conference. The Tigers battle the Penn Quakers at Jadwin on Feb. 6. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
